PITTSBURGH – The Point Park women's basketball team picked up their first MEC win at home over West Virginia State University, beating the Yellow Jackets 76-65 in Pittsburgh.
For Point Park
Alexis Giles led the Pioneers going 3 for 5 from behind the three-point line and 9 for 11 from the free throw line to rack up 22 points. As a team Point Park shot 40 percent from the floor going 26 for 65. From the free throw line, the Pioneers made 17 of their 21 shots to shoot 81 percent on the night.
Point Park had three other players score in double-digits with
Ari Bleda registering another double-double, pulling down 13 boards to lead all players while also scoring 15 points. Bleda shot 50 percent from deep, going 3 for 6.
Camille Fultz scored 15 points in the paint and grabbed six rebounds off the glass. Senior
Emma Pavelek picked up 13 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Pioneers.
The Point Park defense held West Virginia State to just 31.6 percent shooting from the floor as the Pioneers picked up seven steals and seven blocks in the effort. West Virginia State had two players in the double-digits with Zakorrah Russell scoring 14 points and Ashley Kerekes with 13 to lead the offensive effort for the Yellow Jackets.
With the win the Pioneers move to 3-11 overall and 2-6 in MEC play while the West Virginia State falls to 6-6 overall and 2-5 in MEC play. Point Park will be back on the home court on Wednesday January 15
th against Fairmont State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at CCAC-Allegheny Gym.
