Point Park, West Virginia State Meet In MEC Tournament on Wednesday

PITTSBURGH – Point Park is the No. 10 seed in this week's Mountain East Conference women's basketball tournament and will meet seventh-seeded West Virginia State in Wednesday's opening round. Tip is set for 12 noon at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling.

Previous Matchups
  • Point Park and West Virginia State split home-and-home matchups this season, with both teams winning on their home floor.
  • Back on Jan. 11, Point Park defeated West Virginia State, 76-65, at CCAC. In the win, Alexis Giles scored a team-high 22 points, while Ari Bleda recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Camile Fultz also scored 15 points in the victory.
  • In Institute on Feb. 12, West Virginia State pulled away for a 90-59 win over the Pioneers at the Walker Convocation Center. Giles once again led the Pioneers with 22 points, while Emma Pavelek chipped in 13.
  • The Pioneers and Yellow Jackets also met during the 2023-24 season, a 75-73 home win for Point Park at CCAC on Dec. 16, 2023.

  • Head coach Dave Scarborough was named the 17th head coach in Point Park history in April 2022. At Point Park, Scarborough has a record of 39-43, headlined by a 19-9 mark in 2023-24.
  • Point Park enters tournament play with a 9-18 overall record, and a 6-14 mark in league play.
  • Despite being the No. 10 seed, Point Park picked up conference wins over fourth-seeded Frostburg State, fifth-seeded Concord, sixth-seeded Glenville State, seventh-seeded West Virginia State, and eighth-seeded Charleson this season.
  • Four players are averaging double-figure scoring for the Pioneers this season, led by second team All-MEC guard Alexis Giles with 12.9 points per game. Giles also totaled 66 rebounds, 28 assists and 25 steals this season. Giles made a team-high 54 3-pointers this season.
  • Bleda is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She leads the Pioneers in steals (51) and ranks second on the team in 3-point field goals (31) and third in assists (52).
  • Camile Fultz leads Point Park in the paint, averaging 11.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
  • Emma Pavelek rounds out Point Park's double-figure scorers at 10.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Pavelek ranks second on the team in assists (58) and third in steals (33).
  • Aichata Ballo fills the stat sheet for Point Park from her point guard position, averaging 7.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She also leads the team with 79 assists and ranks second in steals (37).

  • Alexis Giles, a second team All-MEC selection, ranks 12th in the MEC in scoring at 12.9 points per game. Ari Bleda is also in the top 20 in the MEC in scoring at 11.4 points per game.
  • Bleda also has a team-high 25 blocked shots this season, which ranks sixth in the league.
  • Camille Fultz ranks in the top 10 in the MEC in rebounding this season, averaging 7.1 rebounds per game.
  • At the charity stripe, Giles ranks 10th in the MEC, shooting 75.4 percent.
  • Giles also ranks seventh in the MEC in 3-point field goals per game (2.0).
  • Ballo ranks ninth in the MEC in assists per game (2.9).
