Pihlgren's Late Goal Lifts Point Park to 1-0 Win over Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. -- Rebecca Pihlgren scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season on Sunday in the 80th minute to give Point Park the 1-0 victory over Wheeling at Bishop Schmitt Field.

With just 10 minutes to play, Pihlgren emerged from a crowd just a few yards in front of goal, burying her shot into the net to give Point Park (11-5-1, 11-3-1 MEC) the lone goal of the match. Her goal, which placed her in a tie for fifth in the Mountain East Conference in goals, was her third of the season against Wheeling, with all three tallies coming in the late stages of the game.

The Pioneers topped the Cardinals (1-14-2, 1-12-2 MEC) 15-10 in shots, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Pihlgren, the MEC's leader in both shots and shots on goal, led the game with five shots and four attempts on target. Maya Figueroa, Maggie Neall, Julia Rusiecki and Mia Gonzalez all recorded shots on net as well.

Goalkeeper Nicole Kuchinski recorded her 11th shutout of the season, extending her MEC lead. Three of Kuchinski's saves came in the first half. The Pioneers only surrendered four shots in the second half., only one of which was on goal.

Point Park wraps up the regular season on Wednesday in a road matchup against Davis & Elkins at 7 p.m. The Pioneers have clinched the third seed in the MEC North Division and will travel to face the second seed in the South Division on Sunday, Nov. 1, in the first round of the MEC Tournament.
