PITTSBURGH – Point Park University has named Andrew Spears as the new head coach of the women's wrestling program, Vice President of Athletics
Scott Swain announced.
"We are all excited to have Andrew on board to lead Pioneer women's wrestling," said Swain. "Through a national search, Andrew rose to the top of our candidates with his extensive experience in Pennsylvania as well as his leadership ability. The future for our program is bright with this new leadership and I know the women on the team are very enthusiastic."
Spears brings over 15 years of experience in program leadership and athlete development in wrestling at the youth, high school and collegiate levels.
From 2016 through 2020,
Spears served as President of the Franklin Regional Wrestling Organization, one of Western Pennsylvania's most respected wrestling organizations. In his role, he oversaw athlete development, coaching staff coordination, and program operations. He continues to serve on the Franklin Regional Wrestling Board of Directors.
"I am honored to take over as the head coach for Point Park women's wrestling," said Spears. "I am looking forward to building a disciplined, competitive room where technique, accountability, and academic development come first, on and off the mat. Point Park is in a strong place to grow this program, and I am excited to be working with these athletes, our staff, and the wrestling community across Western Pennsylvania."
From 2007 to 2011, Spears served as a Junior Olympics Wrestling Coach, focusing on foundational technique, mat awareness, conditioning and competitive mindset. He was also instrumental in helping athletes successfully transition to the high school and collegiate wrestling levels, including many that competed in NCAA Division I and II.
He began his career in 2006 as an athlete development and trainer, working independently. Those experiences included leadership roles at Blue Angels Intermodal LLC and ARL Logistics LLC.
