Pihlgren Scores Brace as Pioneers Beat Wheeling in Home Opener

PITTSBURGH -- Rebecca Pihlgren's two second-half goals lifted Point Park to a 2-0 win over Wheeling on Sunday at F.N.B. Stadium. The Pioneers moved to 1-2 (1-0 MEC) with the win.

PHENOMENAL PIHLGREN

Pihlgren, the Reigning MEC Freshman of the Year and 2025 First Team All-MEC honoree, took a pass from Julia Rusiecki and sprung a breakaway in the 80th minute. Despite her first attempt being saved by Wheeling's goalkeeper, Pihlgren hunted her own rebound and buried her shot into the open cage to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 10:40 to play.

Then, 90 seconds of game time later, Pihlgren darted down the wing past two Wheeling defenders and slotted her shot into the far bottom corner from 12 yards out to double Point Park's lead.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Pihlgren led the match in shots and shots on goal, posting seven and five, respectively.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Point Park dominated the total shots, as well as the shots on goal in the match, with the Pioneers posting 20 shots (12 on goal) compared to Wheeling's nine (four on goal).

Pihlgren was one of nine Pioneers to attempt a shot in the match with Maria Gomez, Meea Irwin, Payton Gibney and Maya Figueroa all recording two and Reece Frank, Paula Sole, Ariana Obregon, Austyn Burkett and Isabelle Meier all tallying a shot.

Both of Gomez's attempts were on goal, and Frank, Sole, Irwin and Gibney all registered shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Nicole Kuchinski posted her first clean sheet of the 2026 campaign, recording four saves. Kuchinski is boasting a goals-against average of 0.50 and a save percentage of .909 on the young season.

Point Park picked up its first win of the season on Sunday, in what was the team's first home game and first MEC game. The Pioneers have won their last three games against Wheeling, and have a record of 3-1-1 against the Cardinals since joining the Mountain East Conference.
