PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's soccer erupted for five goals in the second half to secure a 5-1 victory over visiting Goshen (Ind.) College on Saturday at Highmark Stadium. It was the season opener for the Pioneers (1-0), who totally turned around a 0-0 halftime score into a very exciting final 45 minutes.
Philipp Harder notched two goals and an assist to lead the second-half flurry. The Pioneers came alive for an 11-2 advantage in shots the second half for the offensive output that provided the difference in the game.
Jaume Genovard broke the ice with the first goal of the season -- a strike from the right side of the box in the 54th minute. He took a nice pass from Matheus Lima for the 1-0 lead.
Harder and Moritz Sarfert had some nice passing to set up the second goal. Harder put it in after a give and go in the box with Sarfert. That came in the 73rd minute.
Less than a minute later, Goshen cut the score to 2-1 on a blast from Aidan Twohig. But the Pioneers responded moments later to push the lead. Harder was at it again with a through ball up ahead to Felipe Menezes on the right side. Menezes did the rest with a strong finish.
Point Park put the game away with Harder taking a breakaway in the 85th minute for his second goal and Alexis Lemontagne smashing in a goal in the 87th minute.
The Pioneers allowed just two shots after halftime as the defense tightened up as well. Eduard Garcia made four saves in 90 minutes to get the win.
Point Park will go on the road the next two weeks with trips to Michigan and Florida. The Pioneers play at Monday next Thursday, Aug. 24. Madonna is the favorite team in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
