Box Score LIVONIA, Mich. -- Point Park University men's soccer earned an NAIA Top 25 victory when it went to Madonna (Mich.) and won, 2-1, on Thursday night. The Pioneers improved to 2-0 on the year with the victory, which was their first win over an NAIA ranked opponent since the 2014 season.
Madonna was undefeated in 21 games last year with a record of 15-0-6. That included winning at Point Park, 5-0, last season. Things were different this year with the Pioneers getting out to a 2-0 lead and holding on for the win over the preseason favorite team in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.
Jaume Genovard had a goal and an assist to lift the Pioneers to victory. He assisted on the first goal of the game, a tally by Nils Benning just before the half. That came just 38 seconds before the halftime buzzer. It was one of four shots for the Pioneers the first 45 minutes and the only one on goal.
Just 1:43 after the start of the second half, Genovard pushed the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal. His second of the year ended up being the game-winner.
Already with an 8-4 advantage in shots at halftime, Madonna led 10-5 in second-half shots and 18-9 for the game. Madonna did cut the lead to 2-1 in the 48th minute on a goal by Daniel Watkins. But the Point Park defense held things there the final 42 minutes to preserve the win.
Eduard Garcia got the victory as Point Park goalkeeper making two saves in each half. The Pioneers were whistled for 18 fouls -- compared to 11 for Madonna -- with 13 of them coming the second half.
Thursday's game had the unique aspect of being played indoors. Severe weather in the area forced the game to be moved to the Legacy Center Sports Complex after a delay of 30 minutes. Point Park's road trip continues Saturday at Michigan-Dearborn for a 12:00 p.m. ET kickoff.
