BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – A late West Virginia Wesleyan goal made Point Park women's soccer settle for a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon at Culpepper Stadium in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
Just over 30 seconds into the contest, freshman
Rebecca Pihlgren scored to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead on the road. In the 19
th minute, Wesleyan's Isabella Mazza provided an equalizer to make it 1-1.
The tie score was short-lived, however, as senior captain
Paula Sole helped Point Park regain the lead in the 20
th minute on an unassisted goal that found the back of the net.
Pihlgren's opening minute goal was her team-leading seventh of the season (t-2
nd in MEC), while Sole scored her fourth of the season in the 20
th minute.
Sole is now third on the team in scoring with 11 points (4 goals, 3 assists).
In the 71
st minute, Wesleyan tied the game for good when Carlie Ice scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Ashley McGee.
With the draw, Point Park slips to 5-4-2 on the year, including 4-3-1 in MEC play. The Pioneers are currently tied with Frostburg State for second in the MEC North standings. West Virginia Wesleyan is now 4-5-2 on the year (2-5-1 MEC).
Statistically, Wesleyan held a 6-2 advantage in on-target shots.
Nicole Kuchinski made her second start in the PPU goal on Sunday, recording four saves to earn the draw.
Wesleyan goalkeeper Maite Coutinho did not record a save in the game.
Both teams recorded four corner kicks in the game.
The Pioneers will return home to Highmark Stadium on Wednesday for a key MEC matchup against Concord. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in the afternoon.
