PITTSBURGH – Point Park men's soccer hosted its first-ever Mountain East Conference Tournament game on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. The third-seeded Pioneers couldn't find the back of the net and fell to sixth-seeded West Liberty by a 3-0 final in the quarterfinal matchup.
After 21 minutes of scoreless play, West Liberty found the back of the net on a goal by Ethan Nethery, his third of the season. A little over 10 minutes later, West Liberty's Travis Scandalis scored his sixth goal of the season with an assist from Jasper Newton.
Entering the second half with a 2-0 advantage, the score remained the same until Alex Watt scored an unassisted goal in the 69
th minute to stretch the Hilltopper lead to 3-0.
Point Park held the offensive advantage in the game, outshooting West Liberty 15-9. However, West Liberty had a 7-6 edge in on-target shot attempts.
Point Park had a 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Point Park was led offensively by two on-target shots from
Guy Lehrer.
Giovanni Pezzi,
Lorenzo Grispello,
Ofek Bachar and
Ido Chalamish also recorded shots on goal in the game.
Gregorio Capponi recorded four saves in the Point Park goal.
Meanwhile, West Liberty's Shai'ya Fitzgerald kept a clean sheet with six saves in the shutout win.
Point Park wraps up the season with a mark of 8-9-2. West Liberty will travel to Concord for a semifinal matchup on Wednesday.
