Pioneers Lock Down Salem In Second Half, Win Second In A Row

PITTSBURGH – Point Park poured in 42 second-half points and clamped down defensively to secure its second-straight victory Saturday afternoon at CCAC-Allegheny.

After taking a slim one-point lead into halftime, the Pioneers held Salem to just four points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth. Salem went more than five minutes without a basket to open the second half, allowing Point Park to open on an 11-0 run and seize control. Salem's Taja Brown finally broke the drought with a layup, but the damage had already been done.

The Pioneers' second-half surge was fueled by their shooting from deep, as they went 5-of-13 from three-point range after the break.

For the game, Point Park shot 42.4% from the field (25-of-59), 33.3% from beyond the arc (7-of-21), and 77.8% from the free-throw line (14-of-18). Three Pioneers finished in double figures, led by Alexis Giles with a game-high 16 points. Lucia Hervia added 13, while Elizabeth Boyd chipped in 10. Kamryn Piper recorded the only double-digit rebounding effort of the game with 11 boards. Pieper also hit the scoring column with seven points.

Kayla Walter and Kiyana Larocque each handed out three assists.

Salem was led by Selena Frost, Meilin Guo, and Taja Brown, with each scoring 11 points. Frost and Batoul Khaleefah recorded three assists apiece, while Kori Pilette paced the Tigers with nine rebounds. Salem shot 24.3% from the field (17-of-70) and 27.8% from three-point range (5-of-18), finishing with 13 assists on just 17 made field goals.

With the win, Point Park improves to 5-11 overall. Salem fell to 1-15 on the season.

Point Park will travel to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday before returning home Friday night to host West Virginia Wesleyan inside CCAC-Allegheny. Tip-off for both games is set for 5:30 p.m.
