Moreno Highlights Quartet of Pioneers Named to MEC All-Conference Teams

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Point Park men's soccer featured four players to earn Mountain East Conference Men's Soccer All-Conference awards, the league announced on Friday, with Hector Moreno being named to the All-MEC First Team.

Moreno is joined by Joel Gomez and Alejandro Vega, both of whom were named All-MEC Honorable Mentions, and Sindri Hjaltested, who earned a spot on the All-MEC Freshmen Team.

Moreno, a senior from El Cerrito, Colombia, scored six goals this season, leading the Pioneers and tying for fifth in the conference. He finished the regular season in sixth place in the MEC in shots per game, averaging 2.13.

Moreno also led the Pioneers in points and shots on goal, posting 12 and 14, respectively. His best run of form came from Sept. 16 to Oct. 4, when he scored goals in three consecutive matches, including the last-minute game-tying penalty kick against California (PA).

Joel Gomez, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, finished second on the team with four goals and 9 points. His 20 shots and 10 shots on goal were both third on the squad. Gomez's best tally came with 13 seconds left against Wheeling on Sept. 6, when he cut to the top corner of the box and rifled a shot into the far side netting to give Point Park a 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

Alejandro Vega finished third on the team with three goals and 6 points despite playing defense. A senior from Medellin Colombia, Vega broke the ice on Senior Night in Point Park's 2-1 win over West Liberty when he scored off a corner kick.

Sindri Hjaltested played in 13 games and started three for Point Park in his freshman campaign. The native of Reykjavik, Iceland, posted three total shots, including a shot on goal at West Liberty on Sept. 9.

Point Park sets its sights on Concord for Sunday's matchup in the first round of the MEC Tournament. Opening kickoff in the quarterfinal matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Callaghan Stadium.
