Pioneers Split Doubleheader at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- Point Park softball split its doubleheader with West Liberty on Sunday, with the Pioneers (5-10, 1-1 MEC) taking game one 12-9 and the Hilltoppers (7-14, 1-1 MEC) winning game two 6-5.

Emma Henry, Cam Mann and Gia LaBrie all posted two RBIs on the day. LaBrie and Shania Cope tied for the team lead over the two games, both posting three hits. Mia Arndt hit her second home run of the season in game one and tallied five stolen bases on the day.

Game 1 (12-9 Point Park, W: Mullenax 1-2, L: Pettit 3-5)

Point Park took command of the opening game quickly and would not relent. Mia Arndt's home run along with two RBIs from both Cam Mann and Gia LaBri gave PPU the win.

The Pioneers hopped out to a quick 7-0 lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Emma Henry, Gia LaBrie, Jana Hess and Payton Haller all hit RBI singles in the opening frame. Mia Arndt opened the second inning with a leadoff home run, and Cam Mann and Emma Henry, who reached on an error and a hit-by-pitch respectively, each came home to score when Gia LaBrie reached base on an error.

LaBrie knocked in another RBI in the fourth with her bases-loaded single. After a double steal from Hess and LaBrie, Hess came home to score on a wild pitch to make it a 9-3 ball game.

Shania Cope hit a leadoff double in the fifth inning, and Arndt singled and stole second to give the Pioneers runners at second and third for Cam Mann. Mann ripped a single to bring Cope and Arndt home.

LaBrie singled and stole second in the sixth, setting up Gianna Welsh for her pinch-hit RBI single to make it 12-5 Point Park. The Hilltoppers scored four runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to three runs, but, with the bases loaded, Jaylyn Mullenax forced a fly out and a ground ball to secure the win for Point Park.

Mullenax pitched the final two innings, striking out one, in relief of Emma Henry, who fanned three over her five innings of work.

Game 2 (6-5 West Liberty, W: Mangold 3-2, L: Johnson 4-4)

The Pioneers dropped a back-and-forth game two after West Liberty scored two runs in the sixth inning.

Point Park continued to start fast, scoring three runs in the opening frame of game two. Mia Arndt singled, advanced on a wild pitch and then stole third en route to scoring on an error by the shortstop. Cam Mann and Gianna Welsh hit back-to-back singles, setting up Shania Cope for an RBI single. Jana Hess singled, moving Gianna Welsh to third for Emma Henry to hit a sacrifice fly to left.

West Liberty scored two runs in the bottom of the second, cutting the Pioneer lead to one.

Arndt singled to left in the second inning before stealing second and third. Arndt then scored on an error by the catcher.

The Hilltoppers would go on to tie the game in the fourth inning, with both Isabella McKee and Shelby Harris recording RBI doubles.

The Pioneers took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth. Kaylee Fabiano walked and stole second, and then advanced to third as Arndt reached on an error. Fabiano came around to score off an error on the catcher as Arndt stole her fourth base of the game. Arndt leads the Pioneers with 13 steals on 13 attempts this season.

West Liberty took the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, when Sara Simon hit a two-RBI single to right field.
