Pioneers to Visit Indiana (PA) for Mid-Week Action

INDIANA, Pa. -- Point Park baseball is set to visit Indiana University (PA) on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Owen J. Dougherty Field. 

 

The Pioneers (15-9, 8-4 MEC) enter off a sweep of West Virginia State on Sunday where they picked up 4-3 and 5-4 wins. Point Park has won four of its last five games. Felix Gonzalez led the Pioneers with four hits and four RBIs over the twinbill. Gonzalez doubled twice in game two.

 

Felix Rodriguez tallied two extra-base hits on Sunday, hitting a triple in game one and a double in game two. Chris Williams added an RBI double of his own in the second game. 

 

Camden Dimidjian struck out eight over his six innings of work in game one, improving his record to 4-1 on the season. Ethan Parker picked up his fourth save of the season before pitching 3.2 innings to start game two. The Pioneers' bullpen shut the door on the Yellow Jackets, with Carter Raper (0.1 IP), Zane Griffaton (1.0 IP) and Harold Boyce (2.0 IP) combining to shutout WV State. 

 

IUP (12-11, 7-5 PSAC) enters as a loser of four straight after being swept by Seton Hill in a four-game series over the weekend. The Crimson Hawks are 2-0 against MEC opponents this season, having picked up a 13-4 win over Glenville State and a 5-4 win over Fairmont State. IUP is 5-3 at home this season, but has dropped its last three decisions at home.

STORYLINES

  • Olindo Pezzone leads the team with his 1.247 OPS and .354 batting average, which rank second and 11th in the MEC respectively. Pezzone's nine home runs lead the team and the MEC. He leads the team with 25 RBIs, which is tied for fifth in the conference.

  • Blake Ewing ranks second on the team with his eight home runs - good for second-best in the conference. Ewing is second on the team in OPS (1.134), RBIs (16) and total bases (42).

  • Trevor Jones and Felix Rodriguez are both in double-digits for RBIs with 15 each. The two are tied for third on the team and sit one RBI ahead of Felix Gonzalez's 14.

  • Ramon Rodriguez is second on the team with 24.2 innings pitched. Rodriguez leads the team with 33 strikeouts and leads qualified Pioneers in ERA (2.20) and WHIP (0.92). Rodriguez tossed eight shutout innings on Saturday against Charleston and only allowed two hits. Rodriguez ranks second in the MEC in ERA and fifth in strikeouts.

  • Harold "Shaggy" Boyce threw Point Park's first no-hitter since 2018 on Mar. 13. Boyce became the first Pioneer to be named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 19. He has a WHIP of 1.34 over his 27.2 innings pitched. Boyce pitched 2.0 innings in relief on Sunday and struck out four while picking up his third win of the year.

  • Ethan Parker's ERA of 3.13 and WHIP of 1.20 are second-best on the team among qualified pitchers. Parker is 1-0 with four saves on the year and has pitched 31.2 innings - second only to Ramon Rodriguez.

 

UP NEXT

Point Park will open a five-game homestand as it hosts Fairmont State for four games over the weekend at EQT Park in Washington, Pa. The Pioneers and Falcons will play doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday, starting both days at 1 p.m. The home streak culminates in the Pioneers' game at PNC Park against California (PA) on Thursday, Apr. 9.
