2012 Pioneer Baseball Team Selected As Point Park Hall of Fame Class of 2025

The NAIA World Series baseball team will be honored during Homecoming Weekend in September

PITTSBURGH – Point Park's 2012 baseball team will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2025 this fall, Vice President of Athletics Scott Swain announced on Tuesday afternoon.

The hall of fame induction ceremony will headline Decades in the Dugout 2.0 on Saturday, September 27, during Homecoming Weekend on the Point Park University campus. The event is slated for 5 p.m. at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and PNC Theater.

"We are so blessed to have the rich athletics tradition we have here at Point Park," said Swain. "From individuals to entire teams, the wins and championships have been numerous. This year's honorees, members of our 2012 world series baseball team, exhibit the tremendous success that an entire program can achieve.

"Our current baseball team was also successful, and that tradition was built from the team we are honoring this September. It is going to be an incredible homecoming weekend full of celebration. Go Pioneers!"

The 2012 baseball team went 53-11 during the 2012 season, advancing to the NAIA World Series. After sweeping its way through the NAIA opening rounds with wins over Taylor and Doane on back-to-back days, the Pioneers opened world series competition with a 7-3 win over the College of Idaho. In game two of the world series, Point Park dropped a 9-3 final against Lee University.

After an off-day, Point Park got back in the win column with a 12-8 win over the University of South Carolina-Beaufort. The campaign came to an end with a narrow 8-6 setback against Rogers State as Point Park finished the year setting a school record for wins.

The 2012 Pioneers were led by eight America Midwest All-Conference standouts, including Pitcher of the Year Derek Peluso. Paulsen was joined on the All-Conference first team by Sean Clark, Mike Tullio, Tom Birko, Rob Novia, Javy Marticorena and Marlon Leyva. Nate Spohn was named second team all-conference that season.

In addition, head coach Loren Torres was named the American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year.

In 2012, the Pioneers ranked top 25 in the nation in earned run average (3.11), total runs scored (462), total RBI (391), runs scored per game (7.3), and total hits (587). The team ranked sixth nationally in the final NAIA Baseball Top 25 Poll.

"It was my honor to have served Point Park University's baseball program as its head coach in 2012 along with all the players and the coaching staff," said Torres. "I am full of gratitude and would like to sincerely thank the committee for this phenomenal recognition. It is one of the most meaningful honors I have ever received.

"To become a part of the Hall of Fame with a baseball program that has competed nationally for seven decades is flattering. Congratulations to the team members and our coaching staff, I am excited to celebrate this with you this fall, Torres continued.

"Our journey was special, mainly because we got to share it with each other. The 2012 magical season resembled Point Park Baseball's tradition, resiliency and competitive spirit."

After a successful event in November 2024, Decades in the Dugout returns for its second installment during Homecoming Weekend this fall.

In addition to the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the event will feature a reception, dinner, and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Pioneer baseball program.

Ticket and sponsorship information for Decades in the Dugout 2.0 will be announced in the near future.
