PITTSBURGH -- Point Park men's soccer extended its steel-city unbeaten streak to three games on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Salem on homecoming.

Joel Gomez and Alejandro Vega both tallied their second goals of the season in the first half to lift the Pioneers (4-4-2, 3-3-0 MEC) to the victory at Duquesne University's Rooney Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Point Park took the lead in the 22nd minute when Joel Gomez fired a shot past Salem's goalkeeper Gregory Lynch. Gomez took his pass from Edouard Gagnon and sent a strike into the far post from the right flank.

Then, in the 37th minute, Alejandro Vega volleyed a shot off a corner kick at the back post that was saved by Lynch, but Vega pounced on his own rebound and deposited it into the cage to double the Pioneers' lead.

Tommy Sowinski would tally for Salem in the 62nd minute on a bar-down shot with an assist from Josue Villegas. The Pioneers would hold on to secure the 2-1 win in a much-needed MEC match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Point Park held the advantage in total shots 20-8, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Lynch led the match with seven saves for the Tigers (2-5-2, 0-4-1 MEC), and PPU goalkeeper Anthony Fusay recorded five saves in his fourth win of the season.

Lander Barrio Gonzalez led the match with five attempts in the game, and Joel Gomez posted four shots, including a team-high three shots on goal. Alejandro Vega and Rocco Domenighini both fired two shots on net. 

Lorenzo Grispello posted three shots, one of which was on target, Louis Guffroy added two of his own, and Hugo Ferreira also chipped in a shot.

Sowinski paced the Tigers with four shots and tied with Jordan Johnson for a team-best two shots on goal. 

HOME COOKING

Point Park improved to 4-2-2 at home on the season with Sunday's win, including consecutive victories at Rooney Field. The Pioneers are 3-1 in MEC play in Pittsburgh and have outscored their opponents 6-3 over that stretch.

UP NEXT

Point Park will hit the road on Sunday for a matchup with MEC-newcomer Shawnee State. The matchup, which is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff, will open a stretch of three of Point Park's next four games on the road. PPU returns to F.N.B. Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 7, to face West Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
