PITTSBURGH – Joel Gomez recorded a goal and an assist, including the game-winner with 13 seconds remaining, to lead Point Park to a 2-1 win over Wheeling in Sunday's Mountain East Conference opener at F.N.B. Stadium in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Following a midfield pass into Point Park's offensive zone,
Hector Moreno found Gomez on the left side and then Gomez beat his defender to the right for a goal from just outside the box into the right corner of the net. Following the goal, a celebration commenced along the end line as Point Park had to hold off Wheeling for just 13 second to pick up the win.
Wheeling took control of the game in the 30
th minute on a goal by Elie Simon – a score that made it 1-0 at the break.
Despite the halftime advantage by the visitors, Point Park had a 9-6 shot advantage after 45 minutes.
Just five minutes into the second half, Gomez set up a goal by
Rocco Domenighini to tie the game early in the frame.
Gomez then gave Point Park its second win in a row with his game-winner in the final seconds.
Point Park held a 21-11 shot advantage on the afternoon, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. PPU also had a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Anthony Fusay recorded one save to earn the win for Point Park in goal. Wheeling's Alberto Madail put together a solid effort with eight saves in the visiting goal.
Point Park returns to action on Wednesday evening at West Liberty. Kickoff is slated for 7:30.
