UNION, Ky. -- Point Park University men's golf won the River States Conference Men's Golf Fall Preview Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Ky. The Pioneers rallied from 10 shots down in the final 18 holes and won in a playoff over WVU Tech.
Point Park shot a team score of 291 in the final round Tuesday to erase the deficit and tie WVU Tech after the regulation 54 holes. A playoff was needed, and the Pioneers came out on top.
Point Park junior Max Kaminsky won the individual medalist title with rounds of 74-73-71. That gave him a three-round total of 5-over and a five-shot victory over Taylor Suggs of Cincinnati Christian and Braden Keown of WVU Tech at 10-over.
The Pioneers had three of the top five individual players led by Kaminsky. Sophomore Gino DiPardo placed fourth after a final-round 70. He was 15-over for the tournament.
Point Park's Nick Finoli placed fifth with rounds of 74-78-77 although he competed as an individual as opposed to part of the Pioneers' starting five.
Point Park's score of 291 on Monday included DiPardo at 70, Kaminsky at 71 and Jared Bender and Gage Basiletti at 75. Rafael Perez shot a 79 in the final round.
Point Park opened the tournament with a score of 320 to find itself in sixth place of 11 schools after 18 holes. The Pioneers then shot 308 in round two to get within 10 shots of the lead after the first day.
WVU Tech shot another solid round of 301 in the final round, but the Pioneers were 10 shots better to draw even. Brescia (Ky.) was in second place after 36 holes and ended up in third place.
DiPardo led the tournament field with 15 birdies over the three rounds, and Kaminsky was next with 11. Kaminsky led the par-4 scoring at 3-under and also led the par 3s by playing them in 1-over for the tournament. Finoli was second in the tournament with 36 pars in 54 holes.
The tournament served as a preview for the RSC Men's Golf Tournament to be held April 17-18 at the same location of Lassing Pointe Golf Course. The winner there will qualify for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship May 16-19 at TPC Deere Run in Moline, Ill.
