PITTSBURGH -- No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan had its set plays working on Friday night in a 4-1 victory over Point Park University in an NAIA men's soccer non-conference game at Highmark Stadium.
Indiana Wesleyan (3-2) built a 3-0 lead by scoring on two corner kicks and free kick.
The first two goals came in similar fashion with Evan Young lacing a corner attempt to the far post, where Gabe Quesada was there both times to finish. The connection of Young to Quesada came through with goals in the 11th and 17th minutes for an early lead.
IWU was still up, 2-0, by halftime, and it extended things to 3-0 via the free kick that occurred early in the second half. Sammy Conti connected with a running Drew Glover, who headed the ball into the net in the 51st minute.
Point Park did not go quietly as junior forward Alan Ramos scored his third goal in three games to cut the deficit to 3-1 at the 67:04 mark. Rejep Mukhammedov assisted on the play for his third assist in as many games.
The final 22 minutes saw the Pioneers push players forward in an attempt to get some late goals to tie. Point Park had its share of chances over the course of the 90 minutes, but whereas IWU was able to convert its opportunities into goals, the Pioneers did not as much.
Point Park returns to action on Saturday versus Bethel (Ind.) (4-3) at 5 p.m. at Highmark Stadium. Bethel beat Carlow on Friday night, 6-0. It was the first-ever game for the new men's soccer program at Carlow.
