PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University men's soccer got another River States Conference victory with Sunday's 3-0 win over Brescia (Ky.) University at Highmark Stadium. The Pioneers did all of their scoring in the first half and kept it there to improve to 8-3 overall, 3-1 RSC.
It was the second game in a row that the Pioneers scored three times in the first half. Alan Ramos cracked the scoreboard first when Roberto Whitley set him up for a goal in the 15th minute. Ramos then picked up an assist when he found Josh Williams on a corner kick for a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
Point Park took firm control of the game when Kakanou Fotie struck from the top of the box for a 3-0 lead. Mitchell Roell and Whitley picked up the assists on the play. Roell put his throw-in from the right sideline directly to Whitley's head, and he centered the ball to Fotie for the goal.
Point Park finished with a 21-10 advantage in shots. Juan Somoza got the start as Pioneers goalkeeper, and he stopped all seven shots on goal that he faced for seven saves. Point Park has now won eight of its last nine games with six of those wins coming by shutout.
Now a 3-1 RSC, Point Park is tied with two other teams with a league-high three conference wins. No. 3-ranked Rio Grande (3-0-1 RSC) and WVU Tech (3-0-1) also have three RSC victories. Asbury (2-0-1 RSC) is also unbeaten.
The Pioneers have their next game Thursday at IU East (5-5-2, 0-2-1 RSC), which is coming off a 2-2 (2OT) tie versus No. 3 Rio Grande on Saturday night. Point Park will also visit Ohio Christian next Saturday during that same road trip.
