NORTON, Ohio -- Point Park University men's cross country competed Saturday at the NCAA Division I University of Akron Tommy Evans Invitational, and the Pioneers placed sixth as a team. It was a tough meet with three of the top four teams hailing from NCAA Division I, but Point Park still came through with good times.
The Pioneers had seven runners put forth a 5:30 mile pace or better, which resulted in having their top seven all come in under 22:06. It was a four-mile race, and junior Xavier Stephens led the way for Point Park in 31st place at 21:07 and a 5:17 pace.
Point Park had three of its top six finishers as freshman. Freshman Doug Kostelansky was the second Pioneers runner to finish, and he had a time of 21:29 for 33rd place. Senior Connor Wright (21:35) and junior Bryan Gutierrez (21:53) were 34th and 38th, respectively. Freshmen Robert Hays (21:48) and Camden Seybert (21:59), who like Kostelansky are both from Butler High School, placed 39th and 40th. Senior Sean Hilverding (22:06) finished out the top seven.
Youngstown State won the team title with 39 points followed by NCAA Division II Malone (Ohio), a former power in the NAIA, in second place with 50 points. Host Akron placed third, Kent State as fourth, and Baldwin Wallace took fifth right in front of Point Park.
