WILMORE, Ky. -- Point Park University men's soccer pushed its record to 9-1 on the year with Saturday's 3-1 victory at Asbury (Ky.) University. The Pioneers (9-1, 3-0 RSC) remained unbeaten in the River States Conference and won for the eighth time in a row.
Much of the first half was knotted at 1-1, but Alan Pinho Martins had a big goal for the Pioneers in the 35th minute. Lloyd van Wees found him for the eventual game-winning goal and a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Pioneers guarded the 2-1 lead until van Wees sealed the result with an unassisted goal in the 84th minute.
Point Park had taken a 1-0 lead on Yuki Takeda's goal 13:47 after kickoff. Kakanou Fotie made the assist. The lead was short-lived with Asbury being awarded a penalty kick five minutes later. Noah Welch converted to tie things up.
But that was the only goal allowed by the Pioneers and goalkeeper Jesse Haak. Asbury totaled 10 shots with six coming on goal. Haak made five saves. Point Park had 19 shots with 11 on goal. The Pioneers had a big advantage in corner kicks, 12-2.
Point Park is off to its best start in team history. They will take their 9-1 mark into Monday's home game versus Washington Adventist (7-1). The Pioneers dealt the Shock their only loss, 2-1, back on Sept. 12. Kickoff is 4:00 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.
