Point Park men take 11th at Lock Haven behind Stephens' school record

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Xavier Stephens broke his own school record to lead Point Park University men's cross country on Saturday at the Lock Haven University Invitational. Stephens, a senior from Uniontown, Pa., placed 10th overall to put the Pioneers in the upper part of the meet at 11th place of 32 schools in the team standings.

Stephens raced to a time of 25 minutes, 47 seconds to break his own previous record of 25:59 set at last year's NAIA National Championship meet. It was a huge Top 10 at the meet that included 373 runners.

As a team, Point Park was just outside the top 10 in 11th place, but eight of the top 10 teams were from NCAA Division I or II in a very competitive meet. Host school Lock Haven won the team title. Point Park beat teams such as Slippery Rock, Juniata, Mansfield and Edinboro.

Brody Carlin was the second finisher for the Pioneers in 71st place at at time of 27:05. Doug Kostelansky was next in 79th place and a time of 27:16. Bryan Gutierrez placed 81st and posted a time of 27:18. Carlos Polanco (27:29) rounded out the team score and gave the Pioneers five runners inside the top 100 finishers and all five under 27:30.

It will be a chance to race at the site of the River States Conference Championship hosted by Carlow University there on Nov. 9.
