(RV) Point Park completes series sweep over WVU Tech

Box Score

BUTLER, Pa. -- (RV) Point Park University pounded out seven extra-base hits to beat WVU Tech, 11-3, on Friday, March 18 at Pullman Park. The victory finished off a three-game, River States Conference series sweep for the Pioneers (15-6, 8-1 RSC).

Point Park had two homers, a triple and four doubles in the win. That put in the rear-view mirror a deficit of 3-1 after three and a half innings. The Pioneers came alive to score 10 runs over their next four times at bat to put the game out of reach.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Pioneers went ahead on Jared Campbell's two-run double for a 4-3 lead. Earlier in the inning Edwin De La Rosa provided a sacrifice fly to cut into the lead.

From there, it was all Point Park. The four-run fifth including Gianmarco Marcelletti's mamouth, three-run homer to left field, his third straight day with a home run. Later in the inning, Luis Mujica banged one off the wall in left for an RBI double.

The Pioneers got two more runs in the sixth with Isaac Santana's two-run double off the wall in right field. He was 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs in the game.

Point Park was not done there as Jared Campbell smashed a solo homer in the seventh to make the score 11-3.

The Pioneers' first run of the game came way back in the first after Luis Hernandez's one-out triple and Ed Pfluger's sacrifice fly.

WVU Tech went up 3-1 with a single run in the second and then two more (one earned) in the fourth. But Point Park starting pticher Jonathan Pacheco kept things there and pitched into the sixth inning to get the win.

Pacheco racked up eight strikeouts and walked just two. The three runs on eight hits that he gave up included only two earned in 5.2 innings. Jose Moreno got the final out of the sixth to strand two runners and keep the score 8-3.

Leo Diaz pitched the final three innings to get his fifth save. The right-hander who transferred in from Ohio Valley (W.Va.) was only touched for one hit in three scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked none.
