Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- (RV) Point Park University baseball earned a split in its two games versus NAIA Top 25 teams on Friday from Williamsburg, Ky. The Pioneers (17-7, 8-1 RSC) started the day with a 3-2 win over No. 8-ranked Georgia Gwinnett (21-7) in 12 innings. Jared Campbell's solo homer in the top of the 12th -- his second of the game -- was the difference as Point Park beat the defending national champions.
Point Park went right into the second game of the day-night doubleheader at No. 25 Cumberlands (Ky.). Although they took a 10-9 lead late in the game, the Pioneers fell, 12-10, in a barnburner with the Patriots (20-10).
The Pioneers complete their weekend at Cumberlands with one game on Saturday. Point Park faces Georgia Gwinnett at 3:00 p.m.
(RV) POINT PARK 3, NO. 8 GEORGIA GWINNETT 2 (12 INN.)
Jared Campbell started the game with a homer and gave the Pioneers final lead with a homer. In between, Easton Klein and Leo Diaz combined to give up just two runs in 12 innings pitched.
Campbell, from Sunrise, Fla., led off the game with a solo shot. The game was tied 2-2 when he came to bat with one out in the top of the 12th. He went yard again for the go-ahead run. Campbell was 3 for 5 with walk to lead the Pioneers.
Klein, a junior right-hander, went 5.2 innings as the Pioneers' starter. He gave up just two runs on eight hits. Klein struck out four and kept the walks to one.
Diaz came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth. He got out of the jam to keep the score 2-2. It was the start of his 6.1 scoreless innings of relief. That earned him the victory as the transfer from Ohio Valley (W.Va.) went the rest of the way.
In the Georgia Gwinnett 12th, a base hit, a bunt and an intentional walk had two runners aboard with two outs. But Diaz got a final flyout to end the game. The right-hander from Caguas, Puerto Rico allowed just three hits.
Point Park and Georgia Gwinnett both had chances to end the game earlier, but each team had a starter and a long reliever strand runners inning after inning. Point Park left 10 on base, and Georgia Gwinnett left 16. Kevin Kyle threw 7.0 innings for the Grizzlies, and Gage Williams tossed 5.0 innings of relief.
NO. 25 CUMBERLANDS 12, (RV) POINT PARK 10
The Pioneers lost a wild one verus No. 25 Cumberlands (Ky.) to close out the day, 12-10. Both teams had 14 hits in a game that was tied at 9-9 through four innings and later at 10-10 through seven innings.
The final difference was Charlie Muniz's two-run smash in the eighth inning -- his third homer of the game -- that gave Cumberlands a 12-10 lead. Muniz was 3 for 5 with seven RBIs to bump his season totals to 13 home runs and 41 RBIs.
Walter Hernandez pitched 5.0 innings of middle relief for UC to earn the win. He held the Pioneers to three runs (two earned) after they had gotten seven runs off Patriots starter Brandon Cottongame. Chipper Korbacher returned Point Park in order in the ninth to get the save.
The start of the game was all offense as each team scored runs in the first four innings. Point Park's Gianmarco Marcelletti was 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI. Ty Andrews drove in three runs, including a two-run homer as the Pioneers went up, 7-5, in the third.
Luis Hernandez was 3 for 5, including a go-ahead base hit in the top of the seventh for a 10-9 lead. Edwin De La Rosa got the inning going with a base hit, one of his two hits in the game.
Point Park had four pitchers throw in the game. They combined to strikeout 15 and walk three. The bullpen covered 5.0 innings and gave up 5.0 runs on five hits. The relievers also racked up 10 strikeouts.
John Hawley got it going in his relief outing with six strikeouts in 2.2 innings. He put up a couple of zeroes in the fifth and sixth innings, the first time either team was held off the scoreboard. But Cumberlands got momentum going its way in the seventh inning to tie the score at 10-10.
Muniz's big blast came the next inning for the win.
