Pioneers come up short in twinbill versus RedStorm

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The first time around, University of Rio Grande (Ohio) outscored Point Park University by a wide margin in both ends of a doubleheader. Friday's second matchups of the year were much different, but unfortunately for the Pioneers, it ended up with two losses as well.

Point Park (22-18, 13-11 RSC) lost two closer games to the conference-leading RedStorm (35-11, 20-2 RSC) by scores of 6-3 and 4-3. Although it was a lot better than the 11-1 and 9-0 results earlier this month, it still moved Rio Grande to 35 wins overall and 20 conference wins.

Rio Grande looks to finish off the conference season versus Carlow on Saturday and secure a national bid with the RSC Regular Season title. Point Park will be going to Ohio Christian on Saturday for its final two games. The doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

RIO GRANDE 6, POINT PARK 3
The RedStorm got out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but Point Park got within 3-2 with a pair in the top of the third. Carissa Scekeres had a two-run single to bring the Pioneers closer. Alex Bondi, who was 2 for 3, singled to start the rally. She moved to third on a double by Taylor Goldstrohm, who was 2 for 4.

Point Park cut another deficit down to 5-3 on Angalee Beall's run-scoring single in the sixth. But the Pioneers would get no closer as a consistent Rio Grande offense moved to 6-3 in the bottom half.

Point Park had eight hits off Rio Grande starter Sydney Campolo. She improved to 13-1 with a complete-game victory. Rio Grande had zero errors, which was handy with Campolo putting them to use for 18 of the outs.

Beall took the loss in 6.0 innings for Point Park.

POINT PARK 4, RIO GRANDE 3
The RedStorm put together three runs in the bottom of the fifth to rally past Point Park. The Pioneers had taken a 3-1 lead with some clutch hits in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, Cameron Meier contributed a base hit to tie the score at 1-1. Later in the inning, Cristina Sargent connected for an RBI double and a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, singles by Taylor Goldstrohm and Sydnie Reese set up two runners on with two outs. Hailey Leitner came up big with an RBI hit to increase the lead.

Facing the 3-1 deficit, Rio Grande put together five hits in the bottom of the fifth to come back. With two outs and a runner at second, Caitlin Brisker doubled home a run. Shelby Schmitt came next with an RBI single to tie at 3-3. After a base hit by Taylor Webb put runners at the corners, Zoe Doll delivered the fourth hit in a row, which ended up being the winning single for a 4-3 lead.

Point Park had knocked out Rio Grande starter Raelynn Hastings with its rally in the fifth. But Rio Grande had Hannah Beers come in to pitched the final 2.2 innings. The RedStorm rally made a winner out of her with a scoreless outing on two hits.

Point Park got runners on in the sixth and seventh but could not tie it up. The seventh included a hit and a walk to put the go-ahead run on, but it was not meant to be. Rio Grande out-hit Point Park, 9-7. The Pioneers had seven singles from seven different hitters.

Jada Simon took the loss in 6.0 innings. She gave up four runs with three of them being in the key inning. The fifth also included five of the nine hits she allowed. Simon did not walk a batter and struck out four.
