GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Point Park University men's golf had its first tournament of the spring season on Thursday, April 7 at the Grove City Invitational. It was a positive day for the Pioneers placing fifth of 12 teams in attendance.
It was the first chance this spring for the Pioneers to take the course in competition with the early Westminster Invitational postponed to later this month. It was also the first time Point Park was able to post a team score on the year.
Led by sophomore returner Anthony Santilli and freshman Britton Bringhurst tying for fourth place individually, the Pioneers had a team score of 324. Santilli and Bringhurst both shot 77, which was just three shots behind the medalist, Michael Bell from Westminster. There were 12 players out of the 76 there who broke 80 at Grove City Country Club.
Sophomore Tyler Hillard shot 82 to tie for 23rd place. Newcomers to the team Noah Marshalek, a senior, and Jacob Kubick, a freshman rounded out the team shooting 88 and 106, respectively, in their college golf debuts.
Santilli had a team-high three birdies on the day. His 5-over total of 77 including a birdie on 565-yard par-6 16th hole, his 11th of the day. He finished with a birdie on No. 4 and a par of No. 5 for his last two holes.
Bringhurst had a very solid round with 11 pars and a birdie. He made a birdie on the par-5 18th, his 14th of the day. When he made a par on the next hole, it made a string of 10 straight holes that he played at even par.
Hillard made two birdies in a row on No. 18 and No. 1 to spark his round. That ended a stretch of seven holes he played at 1-under par.
Point Park will get right back into action on Friday, April 8 with a dual match at Wheeling Jesuit. The matchup will take place at Wheeling Country.
It's a big weekend for the Pioneers with them moving right into the River States Conference Men's Golf Championship Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, April 10-12. The championhip conists of 18 holes each day with the winning team moving on to the NAIA National Championship.
