Point Park fell to top-seeded Hope International (Calif.) by a score of 15-4 on Wednesday to end its NAIA run. Hope International (43-14) moved on to the championship round of the Lawrenceville (Ga.) Georgia Gwinnett moves on to the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho, as the winner of the four-team tournament.
After opening up the national championship with a 20-8 upset of No. 1 Hope International on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., the Pioneers fell to the loser's bracket with a loss to Georgia Gwinnett, 10-5, later that night. That set up the rematch with Hope International -- the No. 7-ranked team in the NAIA -- for another early start at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
The second time around, the Royals used two big innings to get the win. Hope International scored six runs in the bottom of the first for a 6-1 lead. They added on late to stretch things out with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 15-4 lead.
Point Park was up 1-0 after its first time at bat. That was after Jared Campbell had a one-out double and later scored on a wild pitch. But the Pioneers were playing from behind from that point on.
Although Point Park cut the score to 6-3 on Carlos Burroughs' two-run, opposite field homer in the fourth, Hope International was able to tack on single runs to maintain the cushion. The first of those inched the lead out to 7-3 in the fifth.
Point Park was able to scratch across a run in the visitor half of the fifth to get within 7-4 only to have Hope International get back to the four-run lead with a single run in the bottom half at 8-4.
The Pioneers had their chances with nine men left on base throughout their eight times at bat. Point Park had a near miss when Campbell's drive to deep left-center in the sixth inning was caught at the wall. That was with two on and two out as the score remained 8-4.
Point Park had a two-out double by Carlos Sanchez in the seventh stranded in scoring position. The game ended with Ed Pfluger's drive to deep center field that just stayed in the park with a man on.
Joathan Rivera got the start for Point Park and pitched into the fifth inning. He shook off a rough start to allow just two hits the rest of his outing. Javier Cardoso finished off a strong postseason run on the mound throwing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief on three hits. Ramon Medina and John Hawley also got on the rubber for the Pioneers.
Hope International had a big performance from deeper in its staff with Chase Hanson getting the victory in 5.2 innings. He allowed five hits and four runs, three of which were earned. He walked four but also struck out five.
The Royals asked top bullpen arm Raul Harrada to protect the 8-4 lead coming on with two on and two out in the sixth. It was his first action of the tournament, and they had him available for the key spot. Campbell gave the first ball a ride to the wall, but Harrada got out of that and pitched the rest of the way. In 3.1 innings, he gave no runs and two hits to get his 11th save of the year.
