LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Point Park University men's cross country competed Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Ky. A big meet with schools from all over the country, the Pioneers ran the men's silver race. They came in 17th place out of 48 teams with many teams from the NAIA in attendance, including four from the RSC.
Point Park had 492 total points, which was about 100 points out of the top 10. There were four River States Conference teams in that race with Point Park beating Oakland City (Ind.) and Midway (Ky.) and finishing behind IU Kokomo, the last of which placed ninth.
The Pioneers averaged 27:36 for their team in the 8,000-meter course. That was with six runners under 29 minutes. Ramiro Ulunque, a junior, led the way with a time of 26:52, a personal best. That put him in 45th place out of 389 runners.
Freshman Luke McKenna posted a time of 27:16 coming in under 28 minutes along with sophomore Joshua Gosselin at 27:27. Both of those Pioneers were among the top 100 finishers.
Jannik Windelband took an agressive approach for the Pioneers running in the top 25 individually through the first half of the race (3.9 K). That had the Pioneers in fifth place as a team to that point. Windelband was still in Point Park's scoring with a final time of 28:16. Teammate Jordan Kullen was a bit ahead of that at 28:08.
Point Park's 1-5 split was 1:24 with the next two runners coming in within 2:09 of Point Park's top runner. That was with Elijah James (28:22) and Johny Dyar (29:01) rounding out the Pioneers' top seven.
Point Park will get right back into action next weekend with the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Schenley Park.
