Box Score PITTSBURGH – Point Park knocked off perennial Mountain East Conference heavyweight Davis & Elkins by a 2-0 final on Wednesday evening at Highmark Stadium in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Moritz Sarfert's 42nd minute goal late in the first half proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. Sarfert's goal was assist by Alejandro Perez.
Nils Benning added the explanation mark in the 89th minute on a 1-on-1 breakaway that was set up by Dominic Thieler down the center of the field.
Despite the 2-0 victory, Davis & Elkins held a sizable 16-7 shots advantage in the game, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Senators also earned 10 corner kicks in the game.
The Point Park defense put together a strong outing despite the offensive pressure from D&E. David Ali earned a clean sheet in the Pioneer goal after recording seven saves on the evening.
In addition to the PPU goals, Benning and Alexis Lamontagne also recorded on-target shots in the game that were turned away.
Davis & Elkins had three players with two shots on goal in the game, including Shemar Daley, Dominique Castano and Francis Lopez Kreik.
D&E goalkeeper Dante Ordenes was charged with the loss for the Senators, allowing two goals while recording two saves in the game.
Point Park, who improved to 5-3-1 (3-3-1 MEC) with Wednesday's victory, returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at West Liberty. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. against the Hilltoppers.
