Box Score 2 PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- (RV) Point Park University baseball won a key River States Conference series with its performance at Shawnee State (Ohio) University on Saturday. The Pioneers hit 11 home runs in the doubleheader sweep winning 18-4 and 17-5 to take the important RSC East Division series two games to one.
Point Park (21-9, 12-3 RSC) remained in first place in the RSC East by beating the Bears (14-18, 8-7 RSC), who are in second place in the division. Shawnee State had won the first game of the series on Friday, 11-7, with a late rally.
Saturday was different with the Pioneers in control throughout. Point Park was up 10-0 in both of the victories. They scored seven runs in the first inning of game one and six in the top of the first of the nightcap. Point Park had 15 hits in all three games of the series to keep the offense coming.
Point Park hit four homers in the first win of the day. Jared Campbell led the way going 3 for 6 with a homer, double, two runs and two RBIs. His twin brother Jordon Campbell was 2 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs. His three-run bomb highlighted the first inning.
Michali Brito added another three-run homer in the second, and it was 10-0 in favor of the Pioneers. Five more runs came in the top of the fourth with Jordon Campbell stroking an RBI single, Omar Morillo driving in two with a base hit and Jared Campbell going deep for a two-run shot.
Luis Gonzalez, who was 2 for 4, blasted a two-run homer in the fifth. Carlos Martinez added a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Many Point Park players had multiple hits, including Isaac Santana 2 for 4 with a double, RBI and two runs.
The pitching was also there with Ramon Rodriguez picking up the complete-game victory in Saturday's opener. In a game that ended after seven innings on the run rule, Rodriguez went the distance striking out nine, walking just one and scattering four runs and eight hits.
The Pioneers picked up right where they left off in the second game of the day. Six runs in the first inning included a three-run homer by Chris Williams, who hits fifth in the order. Martinez later ripped an RBI double.
Gonzalez smashed a solo homer in the second inning. The Pioneers hit two homers in the third with Martinez sending out a two-run shot and Santana a solo shot for his 11th of the year.
Point Park had seven homers in the second game alone with Jordon Campbell providing a two-run bomb in the fourth, Brito going deep in the fifth and Carlos Burroughs a two-run homer in the seventh.
Martinez was 3 for 5 in the game with three RBIs. Williams finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Gonzalez and Eddie Javier Jr. were both 2 for 5 with three runs and an RBI. Santana was 2 for 4 with two runs.
The pitching was spread across three arms for the final game. John Hawley (3.0 IP) pitched into the fourth inning giving up three hits and four runs. Ethan Parker (3.0 IP) got the victory tossing the fourth, fifth and sixth on two hits and one run. Joathan Rivera (1.0 IP) struck out the side in the seventh to finish it off.
