Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Point Park University baseball never trailed in a 14-10 victory over WVU Tech to open the River States Conference series on Saturday. The Pioneers had three players with four hits apiece, and four pitchers combined on the win.

Point Park (27-10, 15-4 RSC) will play WVU Tech (20-18, 9-10 RSC) for Games 2 & 3 of the series on Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader. The series is being played at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, W.Va.

The Pioneers remain in the lead in the RSC East Division by 2.5 games over Shawnee State (Ohio), which won two home games over Ohio Christian on Saturday to improve to 13-7 RSC.

Eddie Javier Jr. was a hitting star for the Pioneers on Saturday going 4 for 5 with two homers and five RBIs. Jordon Campbell joined him on a four-hit day going 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs as did Michali Brito 4 for 6 with a double and two RBIs.

Javier Jr. got the Pioneers on the board with an RBI double in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Campbell capped off a three-run fourth inning with an RBI single as the Point Park led, 4-0.

WVU Tech cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Pioneers responded breaking the game open with six runs in the top of the next inning.

It was Javier Jr. again with the first of his two homers to start the outburst, a solo shot. Later in the inning, a walk and a hit batter both forced in a couple of runs. Brito made the Golden Bears pay with a two-run single, and Chris Williams added on with an RBI base hit to push the lead to 10-3.

WVU Tech got closer at 10-7 through six innings only to have the Pioneers tack on two more in the top of the seventh. More insurance runs came on Javier Jr.'s two-run homer in the eighth for a 14-8 lead.

Ramon Rodriguez was the starting pitcher for the Pioneers, and he went into the fifth inning. He gave up three runs in his outing. Ethan Parker came in to strand a couple of runners in the fifth and keep the Pioneers in front, 4-3.

Jose Moreno pitched the seventh inning facing four batters and keeping the Pioneers in front. He earned the victory with no runs charged to his line. Javier Cardoso II pitched the eighth and ninth innings with a six-run lead when he took over.
