Point Park dominates Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Senior Day, clinches RSC East Division title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University baseball celebrated its Senior Day on Saturday with two dominating wins over visiting Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College. With victries of 8-0 and 10-0, the Pioneers clinched the River States Conference East Division title.

Point Park (31-12, 18-5 RSC) is now 2.0 games ahead of Shawnee State (Ohio) (23-19, 17-7 RSC) with one game to go in the conference regular season. The Pioneers play Game 3 of the series versus Alice Lloyd on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Point Park Field.

Point Park honored its 12 seniors in between games on Saturday. Those seniors all got involved with hitting, relief pitching and defense. And there was also a pair of stellar starting pitching performances from some young arms as part of the day.

GAME 1 -- POINT PARK 8, ALICE LLOYD 0

The Pioneers came alive for seven runs the last four innings to run away with the opening victory, 8-0. Point Park was holding onto a 1-0 lead on Luis Gonzalez's solo homer in the second.

The score stayed 1-0 all the way until the bottom of the fifth, when four runs broke things open. Isaac Santana delivered an RBI single, and fellow senior Eddie Javier Jr. drove in a pair with a double just three batters later. Gonzalez, who was 3 for 4, added an RBI single as the fifth hit of the inning.

Santana had five hits throughout the day and was 3 for 5 in the opener. He stroked an RBI double in the sixth. Michali Brito, another senior, ripped a two-run double in the eighth to push the score to 8-0.

Ramon Rodriguez, a sophomore lefty, was more than comfortable with the slim lead of 1-0 through most of his outing. He thew 8.0 shutout innings racking up 10 strikeouts and no walks along the way.

Rodriguez carried a perfect game into the fifth inning after retiring the first 12 batters he faced. A base hit to start the fifth -- one of just three hits he allowed -- broke up that bid. He improved to 7-2 with the victory.

A big play to keep the shutout going was senior Carlos Burroughs throwing out a runner a home to end the eighth inning. He had come on that inning as a defensive sub in right field.

Kenneth Rolon, a senior, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning making more quick work of the Eagles to close things out.

GAME 2 -- POINT PARK 10, ALICE LLOYD 0

Another shutout but this time with more early offense came in game two with the Pioneers winning, 10-0. Point Park was ahead, 9-0, after three innings. The game went all seven innings that it was scheduled for.

This time it was Ethan Parker posting a great start with the freshman right-hander blanking Alice Lloyd for the first 5.0 innings and piling up 11 strikeouts. He scattered seven hits -- all singles -- and did not walk a batter to keep the zeroes coming on the scoreboard.

Parker struck out the side in the second and third innings and put up two punchouts each in the fourth and fifth.

The Pioneers' offense did not wait around with seniors Jared Campbell and Michali Brito coming through with RBI singles in the first inning. Three more runs came in the second highlighted by a two-run homer from Carlos Burroughs, a senior.

Point Park stayed patient with two hits and four walks in the third to push the lead to 9-0. Run-scoring hits by seniors Jean Santos and Isaac Santana kept the offense going along with Luis Gonzalez's RBI double.

Santana added an RBI double in the fifth for a 10-0 lead. Santana and Gonzalez had two hits apiece. Seniors Burroughs and Cole Wajda each scored two runs. Carlos Martinez also scored two runs and was 1 for 1 with an RBI double.

Senior relievers Jose Moreno and Joathan Rivera pitched the sixth and seventh innings to clinch the series victory. They each faced three batters with Moreno erasing a lead-off hit with a nice 4-3 double play from second baseman Jean Santos. Rivera set the Eagles down in order in the seventh with a foul pop up and a two strikeouts.
