Pioneers break school record for HRs in regular-season finale, next up RSC postseason

PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University baseball made some history in its final games of the regular season on Tuesday. The Pioneers beat Bryant & Stratton-Albany, 3-2 and 20-0, and broke the school record for home runs in a single season in the process. 

Point Park takes an overall record of 34-12 in the RSC Baseball Championship Opening Round, which starts Thursday, April 25 at IU Southeast. The Pioneers won the RSC East Division title at 19-5 RSC and will face the RSC West Division champ Grenadiers (29-15, 20-4 RSC) in a three-game set to determine the overall No. 1 seed in next week's RSC Baseball Championship in Chillicothe, Ohio. 

Before heading out to the playoffs, the Pioneers got into the history books in their final games this year at Point Park Field at Green Tree Park. Point Park scored 23 unsanswered runs to sweep the doubleheader over Bryant & Stratton-Albany.

Point Park ranks eighth in the NAIA with 85 total home runs. The Pioneers are eighth nationally with a team batting average of .346 and ninth in extra-base hits with 195. The Pioneers have 13 different players on the roster with a home runs this year. 

The onslaught in the second game included three home runs to push the school record to 85 on the year. The Pioneers started the day tied with last year's team for the record with 82. 

Eddie Javier Jr. got the nightcap going with a solo homer in the second inning. Later on in the inning Jared Campbell sent his 38th homer over the fence -- a grand slam that made the score 6-0. Chris Williams blasted a three-run bomb in the fourth to push the lead to 10-0 and increase the record. 

It was a slow start to the day for the Point Park offense, however. The Pioneers were trailing, 2-0, when they game to bat in the bottom of the fifth of Game 1. Crixtian Taveras delivered an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1. Carlos Martinez followed two batters later with an RBI single to tie. 

Omar Morillo kept things going with a double to move two runners into scoring position. Jared Campbell got the job done with a groundout to bring in the eventual winning run, 3-2. 

Ethan Van Scoy pitched 5.0 innings for Point Park to get the win. The lefty from California gave up two unearned runs in the second inning, but that was it. He allowed just four hits, struck out three and walked one. 

The second game exploded with offense for the Pioneers. There were 17 hits in all with Javier Jr. going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs and Jordon Campbell 3 for 3 with Morillo getting a pair of hits. Jean Santos and Luis Gonzalez scored three runs apiece, and Jared Campbell drove in five as some other offensive leaders. 

Point Park's entire roster got involved in producing runs, even the pitchers. Joathan Rivera drove in two with a deep single, and Javier Cardoso II and Ramon Rodriguez brought in runs with base hits as well. 

Point Park had four pitchers combine on the shutout. John Hawley returned to the mound pitching the first inning. Logan Creamer pitched the second third innings with a pair of strikeouts while Kenneth Rolon took the next two innings with three punchouts. Joey Tedesco struck out five in his two innings while allowing no runs and no hits. Bryant & Stratton had just four hits and struck out 11 times. 

The RSC Baseball Championship Opening Round series at IU Southeast will be the best two out of three. The series starts with a doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m. if necessary, a third and deciding game will be Friday at 12 p.m. All games will be nine innings. 

The RSC Baseball Championship is May 2-5 at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The top two teams in each of the RSC East & West Divisions automatically qualified for the RSC Championship in Chillicothe, which will be an eight-team bracket. The remaining four qualifiers will come from the teams in third throught sixth place in the divisions playing for the right to advance in the other opening round games this weekend.
