Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Point Park University baseball secured the No. 1 seed in next week's RSC Baseball Championship thanks to beating IU Southeast twice on Thursday. The Pioneers (36-12) topped the Grenadiers (29-17) by scores of 6-3 in both ends of the doubleheader, which was part of the RSC Baseball Championship Opening Round.
The Pioneers won the best-of-three series 2-0 with those victories. The third game will not be necessary on Friday thanks to Point Park making quick work of the matchup that pitted the RSC East and RSC West Division winners. On the line was the top seed in next week's conference championship final site.
Point Park will be the top overall seed in the eight-team event May 2-5 in Chillicothe, Ohio. Check back at PointParkSports.com for the complete bracket assignments when they become available later this weekend.
Ramon Rodriguez gave Point Park a great start tossing 8.0 strong innings in Game 1 on Thursday. The sophomore left-hander allowed only one run on three hits while striking out four and walking none. A double, wild pitch and sacrifice fly in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1 was all the Grenadiers could muster versus Rodriguez, who improved to 8-2 with the victory.
Point Park had a slight edge in hitting in Game 1 with seven hits to IU Southeast's six. Point Park picked up some key hits along the way and took advantage of some bad throws by the Grenadiers for a couple of runs.
Omar Morillo, who had two hits, used his legs to get on the board in the first. After a base hit to leadoff the game, he stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and came in on Michali Brito's sacrifice fly.
A couple of hits and an error led to Point Park's 2-1 lead in the sixth. Point Park scored four times in the top of the ninth for key insurance runs. Eddie Javier Jr and Luis Gonzalez each drove in a run with a base hit, and two other runs scored on wild pitches.
IU Southeast got two unearned runs off of Javier Cardoso II in the ninth, but the righty from Miami, Fla., finished things off with a pop up on the infield to take the series lead.
Luke Schafer took the loss for IU Southeast. He was down just 2-1 when he went out for the ninth but didn't get an out there.
In Game 2, a key rally in the fourth inning turned things in Point Park's favor. Trailing, 2-0, Point Park had six hits in the inning to march in front, 4-2. Four of the first five batters in the inning had hits with Brito coming through with an RBI single to start it.
Javier Jr. added an RBI double to tie the score at 2-2. A groundout by Luis Gonzalez and an RBI hit by Jordon Campbell pushed the lead to 4-2. Campbell was 2 for 3 with a solo homer in the ninth inning. His fifth of the year made the score 6-3.
After taking the lead in the fourth, the Pioneers were able to build on later leads of 4-3 and 5-3 to stay in front.
Ethan Parker worked the first 6.0 innings for Point Park to earn the win. He gave up three runs on five hits. Parker set the Grenadiers down in order in three of the six innings he pitched and improved to 7-3 on the year.
Jose Moreno struck out the side in the seventh for a clean inning of middle relief. Cardoso II came on for his second appearance of the day and earned the six-out save pitching the eighth and ninth innings. Cardoso II faced just seven batters with only a walk allowed.
