Box Score CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- No. 1 seed Point Park University baseball pounded No. 8 Ohio Christian University, 19-5, at the River States Conference Baseball Championship on Thursday night from VA Memorial Stadium. It was the opening game of the championship, and the Pioneers (37-12) moved on to the winner's bracket of their four-team pod.
Point Park faced a 3-0 deficit after the first inning but went on to batter the Trailblazers for four homers and seven doubles. The Pioneers banged out 17 hits in all and put up a couple of eight-run innings to pull away.
Jordon Campbell turned the game around with a grand slam in the bottom of the third. That came with the Pioneers trailing, 3-1. The blast to left-center field started an eight-run outburts in the frame.
In addition to the grand slam, Point Park hit three three-run homers on the night. The first of those came from Isaac Santana to make the score 9-3 after three innings.
Campbell, who was 3 for 4 with six RBIs, added a two-run double in the fourth to push the lead to 11-3.
The sixth inning was the knockout blow for OCU. Point Park scored eight runs before making an out and stroked eight hits in the inning. Luis Gonzalez smashed a three-run shot over the wall in right. A few batters later, Carlos Burroughs yanked the first pitch he saw of his pinch-hit appearance over that same wall, and it was 19-5.
Gonzalez ended up 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBIs. Omar Morillo joined Campbell with three hits going 3 for 4 with three runs, a double and an RBI. Carlos Martinez was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Eddie Javier Jr. was 2 for 4 with a double and three runs. Jared Campbell had a pair of hits -- including a double -- drove in a run and scored twice.
Point Park starting pitcher Ramon Rodriguez shook off some two-out hits that he gave up in the first inning to put up zeroes the rest of his outing. The Trailblazers got all three runs off they scored off of him with two outs in the first. But he gave up just one more hit in the night before leaving with an 11-3 lead after 5.0 innings.
Ethan Van Scoy came on for the sixth inning before Joathan Rivera took over for the final five outs. Rivera gave up one hit and no runs while striking out two in 1.2 innings. The game ended after seven innings due to the run rule.
Point Park moves on to face No. 4 IU Kokomo in the winner's bracket on Friday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. All games of the RSC Championship are at VA Memorial Stadium. IU Kokomo defeated No. 5 Oakland City (Ind.), 11-9, on Thursday after trailing 7-0. The Point Park-IU Kokomo winner will advance to the final round of their pod of the championship on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. while the loser will have to win on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to get to that same game.
