Box Score PITTSBURGH – Concord scored two first-half goals to defeat Point Park, 2-1, in its first-ever Mountain East Conference match on Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.
With the win, Concord moves to 1-0-0 (1-0-0 MEC) on the season, while Point Park falls to 1-1-0 (0-1-0 MEC).
Concord's Syrus Conolly broke open the scoreless game with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute. Richard Henry set up a goal by Santi Possu to make it 2-0 in the 40th minute for the Mountain Lions.
The score remained the same until the 90th minute when Point Park's Cheroky Briard found the back of the net on a penalty kick.
Concord held a 19-11 advantage in total shots, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
Despite remaining scoreless until the final minute of the game, PPU had five quality scoring chances earlier in the game.
Point Park's first scoring opportunity of the afternoon came in the 34th minute on a shot by Ran Arad. In the 39th minute, Javier Morejon had a look from inside the box, but the shot sailed high above the goal and into the luxury suite deck at Highmark Stadium.
Just six minutes into the second half, Fridolin Gerfoer fired a shot on goal that was saved by Concord goalkeeper Nathan Scargill.
Point Park added two more shots on goal in the 81st (Cheroky Briard) and 83rd (Baptiste Gaume) minutes, but each shot was turned away by Scargill.
Scargill finished the afternoon with five saves and picked up his first win of the season in the CU goal. PPU's David Ali recorded seven saves on the nine shots he faced.
The Pioneers will now hit the road to take on the University of Charleston on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
