SALEM, W.Va. – Salem edged Point Park in a five-set thriller on Tuesday evening at the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium in Salem.
Salem took the first set by a score of 25-23, while Point Park evened the frames with a 25-16 advantage in set two. The Tigers regained the lead with a 29-27 win in set three. Point Park again evened the match at 2-2 with a 25-17 advantage in set four, before the hosts outlasted the Pioneers 15-12 in the final set to take the win.
Despite the result on the scoreboard, Point Park outhit Salem .250-to-.188 and had 21 more kills in the match. The Pioneers also held statistical advantages in blocks (9-3), assists (64-48) and digs (90-73).
Both teams recorded six aces in the match.
Nicole Reasbeck led Point Park with 23 kills, while
Avery Budrys Rini chipped in 20 kills and 20 digs.
Alex Koontz also drove home 14 kills to go with 16 digs in the match.
Marianna Oyola-Rivera had a big day from her setter position, recording 58 assists, 16 digs and three aces. Near the net,
Savannah Kitchen recorded seven blocks for the Pioneers.
Point Park will return to conference play on Friday evening, hosting Concord in a 7 p.m. MEC match at the Student Center.
