GREENSBURG, Pa. – On opening day of the 2025 season for the Pioneers, Point Park fell to 0-2 to start the season with 6-1 and 9-8 losses to Seton Hill on Friday afternoon at the SHU Softball Complex in Greensburg.
GAME 1
In the Pioneers first game of the season, Point Park fell 6-1 to Seton Hill in the opening game of the scheduled doubleheader with the Griffins.
Seton Hill opened the scoring up in the second inning with Abby Smearman scoring Kelleigh Pollock from third followed up by a three-run home run by Bre Athey two batters later to put the Griffins up 4-0 through the first two innings.
The Griffins added two more runs, one in the third on a Brooklyn Fukushima single to center field to score Shelby Telegdy and another in the fourth on a Telegdy solo home run.
Point Park was held without hit through the first four innings by Griffin's pitcher Telegdy until Gia Labrie doubled to left center in the top of the fifth inning to get the Pioneers in the hit column.
Point Park got themselves on the board in the top of the sixth as
Remington Koi hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Emma Henry who had reached base on a fielder's choice to bring the score to 6-1 in favor of Seton Hill. Neither team was able to score the rest of the contest.
Jaylyn Mullenax (0-1) went all 6.0 innings for the Pioneers giving up 10 hits, six runs, all of which were earned, and walking one batter. Mullenax picked up a strikeout in the effort.
Labrie went 1-for-3 for the Pioneers with her double in the fifth inning to pick up her first collegiate hit.
Gianna Welsh and
Mia Arndt each went 1-for-2 with a hit and a walk to round out the offense for Point Park.
GAME 2
A walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh by Seton Hill's Anna Kalkowski gave the Griffins the 9-8 win over the Pioneers in game two of Friday's doubleheader.
The Pioneers got the scoring started early as Point Park put up six runs in the first two innings.
Gianna Welsh knocked in the first run of the game as Welsh hit a single to left center to score
Melanie Taylor who led off the game with a single to right center. An error by Seton Hill's shortstop during Gia Labrie's at-bat with two outs allowed Welsh to score unearned. The final run of the inning came as Peyton Haller drew a bases loaded walk to bring in
Alyssa Wahl putting the Pioneers up 3-0.
The Pioneers knocked in three more runs in the top of the second as Taylor led off the inning with an infield single. Taylor would score two batters later as
Emma Henry singled to third base putting Point Park up 4-0. Welsh continued her hot start to the season with a double to right center to score Henry and Arndt who had reached base on a walk.
Seton Hill picked up their first run of the contest during the third inning to make it 6-1. With one out and runners on second and third, Grace Paredes hit a sacrifice fly to right center to score Bre Athney.
Point Park got two more runs in the fourth inning as
Remington Koi doubled bringing in
Emma Henry.
Kaylee Fabiano then entered as a pinch hitter where she singled scoring Welsh to make the score 8-1.
The Griffin's comeback began in the bottom of the fourth as Seton Hill put up four runs, highlighted by an Abby Smearman two-run home run over the center field fence.
Seton Hill ultimately went on to win the game in the bottom of the seventh as the Griffins picked up four hits and three runs. With no outs and runners on second and third, Kalkowski singled to right field scoring Lexie Washington and Parades to give Seton Hill the 9-8 win.
Savannah Lee (0-1) went the distance in the circle going all 7.0 innings for the Pioneers giving up 12 hits, nine runs (all earned), and issuing one walk.

Point Park will be traveling to Florida for The Spring Games where the Pioneers will play in eight games from March 7-11 in Clermont, Florida. Point Park will open up The Spring Games with two games on Friday featuring the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Lynn University. Game times are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
