CLERMONT, Fla. – The Point Park softball team picked up a split on the first day of The Spring Games. The Pioneers took game one 4-2 in extra innings against University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown then fell game two 6-0 to Lynn University (Fla.) 6-0 to close out the first day in Florida.
Game 1
The Point Park offense had 10 hits in their opening game of The Spring Games on their way to a 4-2 extra inning win over University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown.
The Pioneers started off the scoring out the gate as
Melanie Taylor led off the inning with a single to left eventually scoring on a
Gianna Welsh single to centerfield to put Point Park up 1-0.
University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the third as Meghan McDonough scored on an error to tie the game up 1-1.
Nobody was unable to score in regular innings sending the game to extra innings.
Point Park turned up the offense in the eighth as
Remington Koi started the inning off on second base. Koi came around to score a batter later as
Mia Arndt hit a groundball that was unable to be fielded cleanly by the third basemen to give Point Park a 2-1 lead.
Welsh picked up another RBI a batter later knocking in Arndt on a double to center field to extend the lead. Point Park got one more run in the inning as
Gia LaBrie singled to left field to score
Jana Hess who was pinch running for Welsh. Going into the bottom of the eight Point Park held a 4-1 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown scored one run in the bottom of the eighth but the Pioneers were able to escape Brynnae Coe flew out to center field to end the game and give the Pioneers their first win of the season.
Jaylyn Mullenax (1-1) picked up her first win of the season going all 8.0 innings for Point Park in the extra innings win. Mullenax gave up eight hits and two runs, none of which were earned. She also picked up five strikeouts on the day.
Welsh and
Bella Magliocco combined for six of the 10 hits for the Pioneers with each picking up three a piece. Welsh also had two RBIs to lead Point Park.
Game 2
In the second game of the day for Point Park, the Pioneers fell to Lynn University (Fla.) 6-0 to fall to 1-3 to start the season.
The Fighting Knights put up five runs through the first three innings and tacked on one more in the top of the sixth to best the Pioneers. Lynn outhit the Pioneers 10-2 on the afternoon.
Point Park's two hits in the matchup with
Savannah Lee and
Bella Magliocco picking up one-hit apiece. Magliocco had four hits on the day between the two games.
Savannah Lee (0-2) and
Alyssa Wahl combined in the circle for Point Park. Lee picked up the loss going 5.0 innings giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Lee had two strikeouts in the effort.
Alyssa Wahl finished out the matchup going 2.0 innings giving up one run on two hits while picking up three strikeouts.

Point Park will continue their stay in Florida with another doubleheader tomorrow at Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont. Point Park will begin the day at 9:00 a.m. against University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) then close out day two with a matchup with Ohio Dominican at 11:30 a.m. on Legends Way Field #5.
