PITTSBURGH – The Point Park softball team split with Salem University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday March 26 at Fairhaven Park. The Pioneers took game one 5-1 then fell 5-2 to the Tigers in game two.
Game 1
Three runs in the bottom of the third and a run in the fourth gave the Pioneers the 4-1 win over Salem.
In the bottom of the third the Pioneers scored three runs on three hits as a single by
Julia Hill put runners on first and second for
Melanie Taylor. Taylor connected on a pitch to left field to score
Jana Hess who had entered the game as a pinch runner for
Bella Magliocco.
Following Taylor's single,
Remington Koi grounded out to second base to score Hill making it 2-0 in favor of the Pioneers.
Mia Arndt got the Pioneers final RBI of the inning as the sophomore reached base on an infield single scoring Taylor from third.
The Tigers got a run back in the top of the fourth as Brooke Wise homered to left center for Salems lone run of the game.
Point Park got their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Bella Magliocco doubled to center field to score
Emma Henry who reached base on an infield single to the pitcher to lead the inning off.
Jaylyn Mullenax (6-5) had a phenomenal game for the Pioneers going 7.0 innings to pick up the win. Mullenax surrendered only one run on four hits while striking out an impressive 15 batters. Mullenax is currently ranked first in the conference for strikeouts.
Mia Arndt led the Pioneer offense going 2-3 with an RBI. Taylor, Koi, and Magliocco all went 1-3 with an RBI scored.
Game 2
Salem outhit the Pioneers 8-6 in game two on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Pioneers.
Point Park plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the first as a single by
Emma Henry scored
Remington Koi who reached base on an error by the shortstop.
The Tigers put up five runs over the third and fourth innings. In the third inning Salem scored three runs on three hits and one error.
In the top of the fourth a Brooke Wise two-run homerun to right center put Salem out front 5-1.
The Pioneers were able to get only one more run on the board which came in the bottom of the fourth inning as
Ava Hubble scored from third on an error during
Julia Hill's at-bat to make the final score 5-2.
Savannah Lee was tagged with the loss going 4.0 innings giving up five runs on eight hits. Lee is now 3-7 on the year.
Alyssa Wahl came in for three perfect innings of relief giving up no hits while striking out two.
Payton Haller and
Emma Henry each had two hits apiece to lead the Pioneers. Hill and Koi had the remaining hits for Point Park.
With the split Point Park is now 9-13 overall on the year and sits at 4-4 in Mountain East Conference play.

Point Park will resume Mountain East Conference play this weekend as the Pioneers will hit the road for a pair of MEC doubleheaders. Point Park will first face off against West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday March 29 with the doubleheader scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers will then travel to face Davis & Elkins on Sunday March 30 to close out the weekend. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
