Pioneers Open Up Weekend with Split Against West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va – The Point Park softball team resumed Mountain East Conference play this Saturday with a split against West Virginia Wesleyan at Culpepper Field. The Bobcats took game one 4-1 while Point Park came back with a big 9-0 win in five innings to take game two and split the series.

Game 1
A big four-run fifth inning by West Virginia Wesleyan set the tone for game one as the Pioneers fell 4-1 to open up the doubleheader.

Point Park put the first run on the board in the top of the first as Melanie Taylor led the game off with a double and later advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Remington Koi.

With Taylor on third, Mia Arndt singled allowing Taylor to score and putting the Pioneers up 1-0.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Bobcats exploded for four runs on four hits highlighted by a two-RBI double by Lynzee Hauge.

Point Park was unable to score the remained of the game giving West Virginia Wesleyan the 4-1 win.

Jaylyn Mullenax (6-6) was tagged with the loss going 6.0 innings giving up four runs on seven hits. Mullenax struck out five to add to her season total.

Melanie Taylor, Mia Arndt, and Gia Labrie had the lone hits for the Pioneers.
 
Game 2
Game two was all the Pioneers as Point Park's offense exploded for nine runs on 11 hits to take game two 9-0 over the Bobcats in five innings.

The Pioneers came out hot in the top of the first plating six runs on six hits.

Alyssa Wahl got the games first RBI drawing a bases loaded walk followed up by a Payton Haller single to score Emma Henry and Mia Arndt.

With Wahl on third and Haller on second DP Breanna Pies singled scoring Wahl, making it 4-0 Point Park.

Bella Magliocco got in on the action with a single of her own to score pinch runner Ava Hubble. Julia Hill got the final RBI of the inning as Hill grounded out to the pitcher scoring Pies making it 6-0 at the end of the first.

Point Park plated another run in the top of the fourth as Haller picked up her third RBI on a groundout to second base that scored Arndt.

The Pioneers plated their final two runs in the fifth inning as Melanie Taylor singled to score pinch hitter Jana Hess who reached base via a walk. Taylor would then come around to score on a passed ball to put the Pioneers up 9-0 and enact the run rule.

Alyssa Wahl (1-1) got her first win of the year as Wahl went 5.0 innings giving up only six hits and no runs.

Mia Arndt went 3-4 with two runs while Remington Koi and Breanna Pies each picked up two hits apiece. Payton Haller went 1-3 with three RBIs. Melanie Taylor went 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI to round out the major offensive contributors for the Pioneers.
 
Up Next
Point Park will make the short trip to Elkins, West Virgina to take on Davis & Elkins in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader scheduled to start at 12:00 PM. Point Park will go into the matchup at 10-14 overall and 5-5 in MEC play.
