INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Pioneer softball got the split against West Virginia State in an MEC doubleheader on Sunday April 13. Point Park got back in the win column with a game one 7-2 win before falling in game two 5-0.
Game 1
Point Park offense got started early on the day with the Pioneers putting up seven runs on 11 hits to open up the doubleheader with a win.
Point Park put up two runs in the top of the first with
Mia Arndt hitting an RBI single to left field to score
Melanie Taylor from second. Arndt then scored on a
Jana Hess stolen base attempt to put the Pioneers up 2-0.
West Virginia State got a run back in the bottom of the first on a throwing error allowing Chloe Treadway to score.
In the third inning the Pioneer offense put up another two runs as Taylor started the scoring off on a wild pitch.
Gianna Welsh then came through with a single to right field scoring
Remington Koi from second base to make it 4-1 in favor of Point Park.
The Pioneers scored again in the fourth on a
Gia LaBrie single that brought in
Emma Henry from second base.
In the bottom of the fifth
Bella Magliocco picked up an RBI bringing
Mia Arndt home on a ground out to second base.
West Virginia State score their final run of game one on a throwing error to allow Emma Pauley to score from second base.
Point Park closed out the game putting up one more run in the top of the seventh as Magliocco picked up her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Koi home, making it 7-2.
Alyssa Wahl picked up her second win of the season with a complete game going 7.0 innings giving up two runs (not earned) on five hits while picking up two strikeouts. Wahl moves to 2-1 on the season.
Four Pioneers had two hits with Taylor, Arndt, Welsh, and Henry all going 2-for-3 on the day. Koi, Wahl, and LaBrie had the remaining hits for the Pioneers. Magliocco had two RBIs in the game to lead the Pioneers.
Game 2
In game two West Virginia State's Kaleigh Murphy held the Pioneer offense off allowing only one hit in the game to shutout Point Park.
Melanie Taylor started the game off with the Pioneers lone hit of the contest with a full-count single up the middle, but the Pioneers could do no more.
The Pioneers drew five walks on the afternoon but ultimately stranded seven base runners in the contest.
Savannah Lee was tagged with the loss going 5.0 innings giving up five runs on nine hits. Lee now sits at 3-11 on the season.
Saige Payne came in to relieve Lee going 1.0 inning allowing only one hit.

Point Park will travel down to Davis & Elkins for a single seven-inning contest to make-up the contest on March 30
th that was postponed due to inclement weather. The Pioneers will face the Senators in Elkins, West Virginia with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
