Softball Falls to Fairmont State in MEC Doubleheader

PITTSBURGH— The Point Park softball team fell in a doubleheader against Fairmont State on Wednesday afternoon at Fairhaven Park in Pittsburgh. The Pioneers fell 5-1 in game one the lost 10-1 in game two. Fairmont State won the season series taking three out of the four games against the Pioneers.
 
Game 1
Fairmont State scored five unanswered runs before Point Park came through in the seventh to erase a shutout, falling 5-1 to the Fighting Falcons.

The game remained scoreless through the first four innings before Fairmont State came through in the top of the fifth inning with three runs on back-to-back singles by the Fighting Falcons.

Fairmont State put up two more in the sixth before the Pioneers finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh.

Remington Koi reached base on an error by the third basemen to put a runner on for the Pioneers. With two outs Gianna Welsh hit a double over the left fielder's head to score Koi making the score 5-1 before the Pioneers lined out to end the game.

Alyssa Wahl went the distance for the Pioneers going 7.0 innings giving up five runs (all unearned) on eight hits while striking out five. Wahl was tagged with the loss falling to 2-3 on the season.

Five different Pioneers each registered a hit with Mia Arndt, Welsh, Wahl, Bella Magliocco, and Julia Hill have the hits for Point Park.
 
Game 2
The Point Park offense was held to one run on four hits in the 10-1 loss to Fairmont State.

Point Park got on the board first as Melanie Taylor reached base via a walk before Taylor advanced to second on a Remington Koi sacrifice bunt.

With one out, Mia Arndt roped a double to the left field fence to score Taylor giving the Pioneers their only run of the game.

Fairmont State went on to score 10 unanswered runs to beat the Pioneers 10-1.

Savannah Lee (3-12) went 6.0 innings giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits while issuing two walks and a strikeout.

Saige Payne came in for 1.0 inning of relief giving up four runs on four hits while issuing a walk.

Melanie Taylor, Mia Arndt, Emma Henry, and Gia LaBrie had the lone hits for the Pioneers.
 
Up Next
Point Park will remain at home over the weekend with a pair of MEC doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday against Concord and Glenville State. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time with Saturday's doubleheader against Glenville State being senior day.
