WHEELING, W.Va. – The Point Park softball team secured the third seed in the north for the Mountain East Conference Softball Championship with a split against Wheeling. Point Park fell 13-1 in five innings before getting an 11-3 win in game two.
Game 1
The Point Park offense was held to only one run on two hits the game one loss to the Cardinals.
Wheeling put 12 unanswered runs through the first three innings before the Pioneers were finally able to break through in the top of the fourth.
Point Park got their lone run in the top of the fourth as
Mia Arndt reached first on an error by the right fielder allowing
Melanie Taylor to score to erase the shutout.
The Cardinals put up one more run in the bottom of the fourth before the mercy rule was enacted in the bottom of the fifth.
Alyssa Whal was tagged with the loss falling to 3-6 on the season. Wahl went 2.1 innings giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits.
Saige Payne came in relief for 1.2 innings giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits.
Bella Magliocco and
Melanie Taylor had the lone hits for the Pioneers in the loss.
Game 2
Point Park flipped the script in game two, pounding out 11 runs on 13 hits to secure their place in the upcoming Mountain East Conference Softball Championship in Salem, Virginia.
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard first as
Mia Arndt doubled to left field to score
Melanie Taylor in the top of the first.
Wheeling tied the game back up quickly with a run of their own in the bottom of the second as Chyla Miller singled to right field to score Grace Mummery.
Mia Arndt picked up her second hit of the day as the sophomore hit a three-run home run to centerfield to score Taylor and Juila Hill.
In the bottom of the fourth Denise Carillo grounded out to shortstop to score KeKe Warrix making the score 4-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
A huge five-run sixth inning by the Pioneers blew the game open for Point Park.
With two-outs the Pioneers did some major damage.
Mia Arndt began the offensive charge with a triple to right center, her fourth hit of the day, to score
Melanie Taylor from third.
Emma Henry followed up Arndt with a single to centerfield to score Arndt.
Errors were costly for the Cardinals as
Jana Hess and
Bella Magliocco both reached on errors, allowing Henry to score unearned.
Point Park continued the two-out hitting with back-to-back singles from
Payton Haller and Gia Labrie to score Hess and Magliocco making it 9-2.
Wheeling got one run back in the bottom of the six as Mummery singled to left field to score Katelyn Kozlowski.
The Pioneers put up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as
Remington Koi got in on the action with a single to left field where she then advanced to second on an error by the left fielder allowing Taylor to score. Hess then came through with a triple to right center to score Koi making it 11-3.
Savannah Lee picked up her fifth win of the season, going all 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Mia Arndt had a big day for the Pioneers hitting for the cycle as the sophomore had a single, double, triple, and home run to complete the rare feat. Arndt went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs.
Melanie Taylor and
Jana Hess both picked up two hits for the Pioneers.

With the win Point Park will now advance to the Mountain East Conference Softball Championship in Salem, Virginia as the third seed in the north. Point Park will now face off with the number two seed from the south, Charleston, on Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.
