BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Point Park softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Salem University at The Bridge Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Point Park got a shutout in the first game beating Salem 4-0 before falling 7-3 in game two.
Game 1
Jaylyn Mullenax continued to dominate with 12 strikeouts to lead the Pioneers to the game one 4-0 shutout.
Point Park got on the scoreboard in the top of the second as the Pioneers took advantage of a wild pitch as
Alyssa Wahl crossed home to put Point Park up 1-0.
No one would score again until the sixth inning when the Pioneers put up a three-run inning in the top of the sixth.
With bases loaded Wahl hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Remington Koi from third followed up by a double by
Gianna Welsh to score both
Emma Henry and
Mia Arndt, extending the lead to 4-0.
Mullenax struck out three batters in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the shutout.
With her complete game win, Mullenax advances to 8-7 on the season. In 7.0 innings of work the junior allowed only three hits and issued one walk while picking up another impressive 12 strikeouts to add to her season total.
Mia Arndt went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while
Melanie Taylor, Henry, Welsh, and
Bella Magliocco had the remaining hits. Welsh also had two RBIs while Wahl had the remaining RBI.
Game 2
Salem turned up the offense in game two outscoring the Pioneers 7-3 to get the split with Point Park.
Salem scored six unanswered runs until the Pioneer offense started to come alive in the top of the fifth as
Gia LaBrie came home a
Bella Magliocco groundout to the pitcher, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Tigers.
The Tigers quickly got the run back in the bottom of the fifth as Salem brought in a run on an infield ground out to second base to make it 7-1 going into the top of the sixth.
The Pioneers attempted a comeback putting up two runs in the top of the sixth. The Pioneers got back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases for
Payton Haller who came through with an RBI single to left field scoring
Remington Koi.
Emma Henry then came around on a pass ball to make it 7-3 but the Pioneers were unable to get anymore across.
Savannah Lee was tagged with the loss going 3.2 innings giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. Lee now sits at 3-9 on the season.
Alyssa Wahl came into the game in relief going 2.1 innings giving up one run on three hits.
Offensively,
Gianna Welsh went 2-for-3 to lead the Pioneers. Magliocco and Haller had the lone RBIs for the Pioneers.
Up Next
Point Park will resume Mountain East Conference play over the weekend as the Pioneers will travel down south to face off with the University of Charleston and West Virginia State on Saturday and Sunday. Point Park will go into the matchup with a 12-17 overall record and a 6-7 record in Mountain East Conferene play. On the road the Pioneers are now 6-7.
