Women's Soccer Hosts Florida Southern at Highmark Stadium on Thursday

PITTSBURGH – The Point Park women's soccer team will open its 2025 campaign against Florida Southern College on Thursday evening at Highmark Stadium. The 2025 home opener and Black Out Game is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

All Pioneer fans are asked to wear black for Thursday's home opener, as Point Park will unveil its new black Nike uniforms during the contest.

The Pioneers enter the 2025 season under first-year head coach Colin Baker. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native comes to Pittsburgh and Point Park following a highly successful two-year stint at Missouri Western, a NCAA Division II institution in St. Joseph, Missouri.

  • Point Park finished the 2024 season with a 3-10-5 overall record, including a 1-9-4 mark in conference play. Point Park was 2-3-3 at home and 1-7-2 on the road. Six games were decided by one goal, going 2-4 in those games.
  • Point Park went 2-1-1 in non-conference play a season ago, outscoring its opponents 6-3 across the four matches.
  • Offensively, Point Park will have to replace its leading goal-scorer from a season ago in Vanessa Vazquez. The senior scored four goals to lead the Pioneers in goals and points a season ago.
  • Returner Cara Spry finished second on the team in points (7), second in goals (3), second in assists (1), and tied for first in game-winning goals (1) across 13 games (11 starts) during the 2024 season. Spry's game-winner came against non-conference opponent Salem in a 1-0 victory on Sept. 29.
  • Gillianne Stewardson finished tied for third on the team in both points (4) and goals (2). Stewardson led the Pioneers in minutes played at 1,404 and was one of three players to start all 17 games last season. Stewardson's 12 shots on goal were tied for second-most for PPU, while her 18 shots ranked second.
  • Eight of the top nine point-scorer from last season are returning for Point Park this fall, including Spry, Stewardson, Jurnee Durrett-Finney (4), Anna Comas Girones (4), Sterre Kuijper (3), Martina Cardemil (3), Klara Bring (3), and Paula Sole (3).
  • Goalkeeper Frederieke Rijlaarsdam recorded a team-high 37 saves for PPU last season. Rijlaarsdam recorded 10 saves on Oct. 9 at West Virginia State, tying for sixth-most in a single game among all MEC goalkeepers in 2024.
