INSTITUTE, W.Va. - A rematch of a 2025 MEC first-round tournament matchup, West Virginia State used a strong second quarter to defeat Point Park, 78-67, inside the Walker Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon in southern West Virginia.
The contest featured three of the four quarters being a 2-point-or-less scoring margin. West Virginia State outscored the Pioneers by 10 in the second quarter (27-17).
At times close, the Yellow Jackets led the entire contest, shooting 70.6 from the floor (12-of-17) in the second quarter to grab a double-digit lead at the break.
Camille Fultz led the Pioneers in scoring with 18, shooting an impressive 8-13 from the field (2-2 from three) with a team-high five assists. The Pioneers had three other double-digit scorers with Elizabeth Boyd scoring 14, and Alexis Giles and Sophia Moore adding 12 apiece. Lucia Hervia led Point Park in rebounding with 11, while also scoring nine points.
The Pioneers assisted in 15 of 24 field goals in the game.
West Virginia State shot 39.2 percent from the field (29-72) and 37.5 percent from three-point range (9-24), while Point Park shot 43.6 percent from the floor (24-55) and 36.8 percent (7-19) from deep.
For the Yellow Jackets, Baylee Goins scored a game-high 35 points and grabbed eight boards. Latisha Parris chipped in with 24 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
With the win, State moves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in league play, while Point Park falls to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in MEC action.
Point Park continues conference on the road with a trip to Fairmont State on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
