Pioneers Beat Cairn, PSU Harrisburg to Sweep Doubleheader

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Point Park volleyball picked up wins over Cairn and PSU Harrisburg on Saturday, sweeping the PSU Harrisburg Tri-Match. The Pioneers improved to 4-11 on the season with the results.

 

GAME 1 - Point Park 3, Cairn 1

Point Park featured strong performances across the board in its 3-1 win over Cairn in the team's first match. Patricia Calero-Irizarry tied for the game lead with 14 kills, good for her best total this season. Calero-Irizarry was efficient in her attack, recording a season-high .500 attack percentage.

 

Marianna Oyola-Rivera finished the match with 10 kills, and 18 assists, finishing third and second on the team in each stat. Oyola-Rivera also chipped in three aces and two total blocks, the latter of which tied for the team lead. Her assists were second only to Te'Jah Montgomery who recorded four.

 

Mia Arndt led the match with her 20 digs. Arndt was one of two Pioneers to post double figures in digs, with Nicole Reasbeck contributing 11 digs to go with her 13 kills. Reasbeck finished second on the team in kills and in digs, and it was her second consecutive game with double-digit kills. 

 

Point Park picked up 25-16, 25-16 and 25-15 wins after dropping the first frame 25-20. The Pioneers posted a hitting percentage of .227 to just .088 of Cairn. Point Park lit up the stat sheet, beating Cairn in kills (49-31), aces (12-7), blocks (5-3), assists (44-28) and digs (67-54).  

 

GAME 2 - Point Park 3, PSU Harrisburg 1

Point Park continued its success in game two of its doubleheader, taking down PSU Harrisburg in four sets. The Pioneers won set one 25-23 before picking up 25-16 and 25-18 wins in sets three and four.

 

Oyola-Rivera led the team with 11 kills and five aces, adding to her team lead. She recorded 13 assists in the second match, second only to Brooke Bednarski who tallied 15, tying for the game high.

 

Nicole Reasbeck added another 10 kills and led the team with her 17 digs. Reasbeck was one of three Pioneers with double-digit kills as Mia Arndt added 14 and Bednarski posted 12. Bednarski also chipped in three aces to finish second on the team.

 

Point Park out-blocked PSU Harrisburg 6-4, with Amiera Smith posting a game-high four solo blocks. Smith finished the day with five solo blocks after she recorded one against Cairn. 

 

UP NEXT

Point Park returns to the Student Center Gym on Tuesday as it resumes MEC play in a matchup with Davis & Elkins. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
