WHEELING, W.Va. -- Point Park softball opened its season on Thursday with a doubleheader against Ursuline at Highland Sports Complex. The Pioneers dropped both games, 9-5 and 8-2.
GAME 1 (9-5 UC - W: Wack 1-0, L: Mullenax 0-1)
The Pioneers opened the first game with a five-run first inning. Emma Henry tripled to record Point Park's first RBI on the season. Henry was brought home to score in the next at-bat, courtesy of a double from Gianna Welsh.
Henry posted a team-high two hits across her three at bats, and was one of four Pioneers with an RBI, joined by Welsh, Breanna Pies and Jana Hess. Pies' first-inning single brought Welsh home to score, and Hess joined the hit parade to drive in Kaylee Fabiano.
Ursuline (2-0) would go on to score nine unanswered runs, four of which came in the first inning. Casey Barton posted three hits in game one, and Kathleen Wack pitched 6.2 innings allowing only two unearned runs to pick up the win.
GAME 2 (8-2 UC - W: Franko 1-0, L: Johnson 0-1)
Point Park was held to only two hits in the second game, both of which came off the bat of Mia Arndt. Arndt singled to lead off the game, and scored on a groundout from Cam Man in which Ursuline's first baseman recorded an error.
The Pioneers wouldn't score again until the sixth inning, when, with the bases loaded, Tarryn Morris walked to bring in Jana Hess.
Julia Johnson made her debut for the Pioneers in game two, pitching all six innings. Johnson struck out seven with three walks, allowing nine runs - eight of which were earned.
Heidi Earl led Ursuline in game two with three hits and three RBIs.
