Pioneers to Take on Frostburg State, Fairmont State Over the Weekend

FROSTBURG, Md. -- Point Park softball is set for a four-game weekend with doubleheaders against Frostburg State and Fairmont State on Saturday and Sunday. Both days are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Point Park (7-22, 2-10 MEC) seeks its first win since Mar. 26 and its first conference win since Mar. 23. PPU was swept by Gannon in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Kaylee Fabiano led the Pioneers with her two RBIs on Wednesday, which came on her single in the second inning of game two. Fabiano brought Emma Henry and Jana Hess home to score.

 

Cam Mann's two hits led all Pioneers on Wednesday, with Fabiano, Ava Hubble, Jana Hess, Emma Henry, Shania Cope and Payton Haller all tallying hits. Julia Johnson struck out five batters over her 5.2 innings of work in game two.

 

Frostburg State enters with a 24-4 (10-2 MEC) record. The Bobcats are winners of eight straight, including a sweep over Point Park on Mar. 29. FSU picked up 13-1 and 16-2 wins over the Pioneers. 

 

Fairmont State (21-7, 11-1 MEC) saw its 13-game winning streak end last Saturday with a 9-1 defeat to West Liberty. The Falcons picked up 9-1 (five innings) and 4-1 wins over Point Park over their win streak. Fairmont State's only home loss of the season was the loss to West Liberty.

 

STORYLINES

  • Gianna Welsh leads the team in slugging (.538), OB% (.449), OPS (.987) and walks (10). Welsh is tied with Cam Mann and Emma Henry for the second-most home runs on the team with one.

  • Mia Arndt leads the team with three home runs and 23 stolen bases. Arndt leads the MEC in stolen bases without a caught stealing (minimum 20 attempts).

  • Cam Mann's 19 RBIs lead the Pioneers. Mann tallied six RBIs last weekend across the Pioneers' four games on Apr. 3 and Apr. 4.

  • Jana Hess is second on the team with 14 RBIs and leads the team in fielding percentage (minimum 100 chances) at .994. Mann's fielding percentage is .990 over 101 chances, and Mia Arndt boasts a .977 fielding rate across her 78 chances. 

  • Emma Henry is second on the team among qualified batters in OB% at .349. Henry's lone triple is tied for 13th in the MEC. 

  • Freshman Julia Johnson leads Point Park in strikeouts (49), ERA (5.23) and innings pitched (99.0). Johnson ranks ninth in the MEC in strikeouts. Johnson is 18th in the conference in wins with 4.

  • Point Park features five players with a minimum of 55 at bats and an average over .250: Cam Mann (.310), Emma Henry (.304), Mia Arndt (.278), Gia LaBrie (.257) and Ava Hubble (.254)
